official proof that ‘Doctor Who’ is now so hip it might start to be annoying

A commenter at Gawker -- Nick Denton’s über hip Manhattan media gossip blog -- is calling himself “the Doctor,” and is using an image of the TARDIS as his avatar:

I’ll just remind everyone that I was uncool long before it was cool to be so, and will remain so long after it's uncool to be uncool again.

Your statement about being uncool reminded me of one of the froodiest things DNA ever wrote: "Sheesh, you guys are so unhip it's a wonder your bums don't fall off." —Zaphod Beeblebrox

What would be cool would be if the Doctor actually did eat a cheeseburger during an episode. (When's the last time we actually saw the Doctor eat something, anyway?)

The Doctor did just drink that foamy stuff in "Turn Left" (which was cut from the Sci Fi version).

It bothers me that the Doctor never got his steak and chips in that episode with Margaret, the Slitheen...

Can we reference past versions of the show?

Tom Baker's Dr. Who ate candy - JuJu-somethings - from a paper bag he always carried.

Jelly Babies are what Tom Baker was always offering to people.

Jelly Babies! That's what they were! Thanks. It's been years since I last saw those episodes.

I was sure I saw him eat them occasionally, but my memory is hazy.

Clayj asked:

Hmmm. He said he was starving and asked Mrs. Moore if she had a hot dog in her bag in Age of Steel, but she didn't.

He stuck two fingers in a jar of something (jam?) at Chloe's house in Fear Her but didn't get to eat any of it when Rose gave him the "that's not done" look.

No wonder he's so thin--never gets to eat!

actually, Doctors 9 and 10 probably have eaten and drank more than any of the other doctors combined... certainly, while TB's Doctor was always calling for tea or muffins, he rarely got to actually eat -- he ate pickles in one episode, The Warrior's Gate, and drank wine at least in Brain of Morbius, the jelly babies hardly count as sustenance.

however, we at least know Nine and Rose went for chips at the end of Father's Day, and that Ten had christmas dinner at rose's mum's house, drank banana daquiries in The Girl in the Fireplace, ate lunch in the school cafeteria in School Reunion, ate dinner at Sir Robert's House in Tooth and Claw, had nibbles ("I love nibbles!") in the Lazarus Experiment, ate chips while on the run in The Sound of Drums, and probably at least a dozen other instances here and there....

to be fair, it's hard for someone to eat and do lines clearly, and the old DW had such a small budget, endless re-takes for food related problems were not likely to be budgeted in... the new Who has a bit more money on hand. but i give it to DT -- it's quite the feat for him to be able to do so, and keep up that rapid speaking pace he uses...

"...he ate pickles in one episode, The Warrior's Gate, and drank wine at least in Brain of Morbius, the jelly babies hardly count as sustenance."

As opposed to pickles? :)

The question was whether he actually ever ate anything.

at least pickles have a vegetable (fruit?) base... and yes, TB did actually pop a pickle in his mouth and eat it while doing the scene...

i should be embarrassed i could rattle all of that off so quickly, but i'm ... not. it used to irk me that not much eating was featured in DW and a lot of my fan fiction involved meals.

Recently there were all those walnuts (they were walnuts, right?) in The Unicorn and the Wasp. Not technically a meal, though, as he was using them to counteract the poison.

OMG, Deanne, I can't believe I forgot the walnuts and anchovies and ginger beer scene! Thanks for reminding me. That was so funny.

Indeed, he seems to be making a point of eating something every other episode these days.

Not to mention that hot food will be cold by the time all the takes are done. I remember either in the confidential or the commentary for The Sound of Drums when they were all eating chips/fries, they mentioned that the chips may have been nice for the first take, but by the time the whole scene was finished they were pretty disgusting and hard to choke down.

I was just watching Voyage of the Damned and the Doctor ate a buffalo wing... you actually see him eat it too.

He ate the little cakes with the edible ball bearings in "Fear Her". He even talks and eats at the same time in that one.

Good Lord, that's horrible. I've been a Doctor Who fan since I was like 5, thanks to my father.
