arrgh! someone needs strangling

IMDB’s Studio Briefing is calling Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2a chick flick to compete with all the fanboy, druggie, and monster stuff out there for males.” Presumably that means The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express, and, I dunno, maybe The Mummy 3.

Fuckety fuck fuck, this kind of thinking drives me insane. Why are monsters and drugs considered boys-only? Don’t these people know that plenty of girls like monsters and mind-altering substances? I mean, you don’t have to be a fan of certain individual flicks -- as I am not of Pineapple or Mummy 3 -- to be freakin’ pissed off at this attitude. Why is the only thing considered appropriate for girls junk about mooning over impossibly perfect boyfriends?

I won’t deny that some girls are complete fucking morons who define themselves in relation to men, but not all of us do that. Give us a little credit.

This is nothing new. It seems like they don't realize that times have changed and our interests are not what they used to be. For me, I'll take the Dark Knight over movies like the Sisterhood or Sex in the City which I have no interest in altogether. The same goes for these so-called sales that come up where all the things I like so up on the Father's Day ad (e.g., electronics, etc.). I may be the oddball but it's just the way things are.

For that matter, not every man in our culture automatically hates films that aren't "fanboy, druggie, and monster stuff."

Perhaps intelligent, interesting people of all genders are capable of enjoying a broad range of art and entertainment "stuff."

Or is that too radical? MaryAnn, have I gone too far with my crazy liberal theories?

My sister's favorite movies? LotR trilogy. She watched them so much it irritated her boyfriend--who was not the ungeeky sort.

Kate, the Thought Police are on their way.

MaryAnn, have I gone too far with my crazy liberal theories?

You have, Kate! Why do you hate America? Don't you support the troops as they fight for our God-given right to treat everyone as a stereotype?

I love IMDB. I really do. But clearly it is run by men who don't bother actually looking at a movie's audience. Oh wait...that would be all of Hollywood.

This woman who's seen "The Dark Knight" 4 times so far agrees - this sexism has really bothered me in articles about the record-breaking run "The Dark Knight" has been enjoying. The question of whether it might outgross "Titanic" in the U.S. (inflation and all that aside) seems to be boiled down to the answer: No, because teenage girls mooning over Leo were the tipping point for "Titanic" and "The Dark Knight" only appeals to guys. Not only is that horribly sexist reasoning, it glosses over that a lot of women have seen "The Dark Knight". When it opened in my area with those sold-out midnight shows, and the regional newspaper covered it, the fact that there were tons of young girls there was reported with not a blink of a metaphorical eye! How come the national press isn't so even?

My wife and I would not be together is she was that sort of "chick"...in fact she has al ot of disdain for women who fill their entertainment with only soap-opera, tissue love story, romantic comedy fare and ignore the adrenaline-pumping thrill of good action adventure like (and you have to love her for this) Doctor Who and movies like The Dark Knight.

Katie, years ago I used to frequent IMDB but I actually got tired of the "boys only" attitude there. I felt like (while it probably wasn't true) the ONLY girl in the clubhouse!

While frequenting a Star Wars fan's blog, he said something like, "Yeah, I know I have no life. That's why I don't get to touch vaginas!" I know he was trying to be funny and self depracating, but why do vaginas and Star Wars (or any other geekery) have to be mutually exclusive?!

I have a vagina, and I love geeky sci-fi, comics and video games. And I HATE romance movies, especially rom-coms, with very few exceptions.

It's not that *Star Wars* and vaginas are mutually exclusive, it's that some men -- no matter what their hobbies -- and vaginas are mutually exclusive. :->

Bwahahaha! OMG, too bad I was drinking soda when I read this!
