“Blink” wins HugoJust want to point out that, as I unequivocally predicted almost a year ago, the Doctor Who episode “Blink” just won this year’s Dramatic Presentation, Short Form Hugo. I watched the episode again last night, which was probably my tenth viewing (or more), and it just never gets old. I'll make an unequivocal prediction for next year, too: DW will win again in this category, with the episode “Midnight.” Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

I LOVED BLINK (which I think was about the best hour ever of televised SF), but also admired every other short form nominee, especially the wonderfully evocative Cornell episodes of Dr. Who and the Torchwood episode.
While "Midnight" will probably be nominated, I think the Library episodes will win. That would give Moffat four consecutive Hugos for his Dr. Who work.

As I said last September ( http://www.flickfilosopher.com/blog/2007/09/doctor_who_blogging_blink.html#comment-19905 ):
I think MaryAnn's not off the mark when she predicts it will win the Hugo. Actually, I happen to know she's right. Don't ask how.
You're still not allowed to ask how. ;-)

Perhaps "allowed" wasn't the best word for me to use.
Suffice to say, there are some predictions I choose to confirm, and some I choose not to. This was one of the former.

Well, yeah, particularly since nominations for the Hugos didn't begin until January!
Usually, though, a sure thing like Blink at least gets nominated for a Hugo, though it doesn't always win.

I watched 'Blink' before I went to bed one night with all the lights off and I was genuinely scared. It's a brilliant hour of television and the Doctor's mantra has stayed with me since that night.
A well deserved award.

I think there is a good chance that we'll have three Doctor Who episodes on next year's Hugo ballot:
Midnight
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
Turn Left
I also think there is a good chance of at least a two Torchwood episodes (which would fill up the ballot).
On the other hand, there is at least one really good, very SF Lost episode (The Constant) and perhaps something from Galactica, so it's going to be a very good year.

Moffat's two-parter and 'Turn Left' have been nominated. 'Midnight' hasn't. I'm gobsmacked.

"Turn Left" really needs to be seen in the context of Donna's journey to be fully appreciated. I'm not sure how much is lost for someone who has never seen her other episodes.
I wasn't too taken with Moffat's two parter. I disiked River Song's smugness and thought her fate - babysitting imaginary children in Donna's fantasy, stuck with the company of her work colleagues - was appalling, given that previously she had been shown as an adventuring archeologist.
I thought Midnight was outstanding, and I'm also gobsmacked it hasn't been nominated.

And something other than Dr. Who ("Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog") won the Short Form Hugo in 2009. Who'd'a thunk that?
