Nazis for Christmas

If it’s Christmas, it must be time for Nazis! MGM has announced the release date of Bryan Singer’s new film Valkyrie, and it’s Friday, December 26, 2008. Cuz nothing says holiday fun -- or “gimme an Oscar” -- like some good old goosestepping and heil-Hitlering.

Actually, I kid Valkyrie, even though it’s the movie that almost got booted out of Germany because its star, Tom Cruise, is a Scientologist and the Germans kinda officially frown on cults, and also even though Cruise in the flick looks like something out of Hogan’s Heroes:

The film might be all right. Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who led the plot to assassinate Hitler. Doesn’t this sound exciting?

A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan – known as Operation Valkyrie – these men plot to assassinate the dictator and over-throw his Nazi government from the inside. With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

I’m glad they didn’t tell us how it ends, but I’m guessing good triumphs over evil and that Our Hero gets to go home to his family in the end. You heard it here first!

Tom Cruise as a Nazi (actually, Stauffenberg wasn’t a member of the Nazi party) rang some bells for me, and this new image from the film, just released by MGM, rang that bell harder:

And then I realized where we’d seen Cruise in this role before:
