trailer break: ‘Rachel Getting Married’Take a break from work: watch a movie trailer... In other words, Jonathan Demme gets Anne Hathaway to wallow in indie grunginess, and smoke in artistically appropriate ways (because movies are no longer allowed to approve of tobacco use). I bet she gets to indulge in some creative swearing and nudity, too. You know, purely for artistic purposes. I like Bill Irwin. He made me a dinner of yarn spaghetti once. But that’s a whole other story. Rachel Getting Married opens in limited release on October 3. (Technorati tags: Rachel Getting Married, trailer) Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

Hey! A female Loveable Fuckup!
They are so often used in sister relationships (one is "normal" and annoying, one is an LF and also annoying).
I just hope it's not cliche in that "look-how-not-cliche-we-are" way, y'know??

Just Netflixed this and was completely blown away. The trailer does not begin to show the emotional complexity of the movie - most of what it shows is from the first 30 minutes of the film. During that time I almost gave up on it...Anne Hathaway was doing a marvelous job with a very-hard-to-like character, a self-absorbed addict who insists that everything is about her.
Then the film starts to delve into the interwoven relationships and dynamics of the family and you realize that EVRYONE is in the wrong, even though each one of them has justifications for feeling the denial, or resentments, or guilt, or anger that they do.
That a story with this level of emotional complexity was made at all is a minor miracle...that is was made as a story almost completely about women is a major miracle! It's a story about two sisters (there's a well-realized mother and father, and a stepmother and a fiancee, too, but the core is the sisters) who are two REAL FEMALE PEOPLE. They move through a story in which they have to learn and develop as they interact with each other. And they are allowed to do this as human beings -- not as "chicks" or "girls."
This is not a fun or easy movie to watch, but in my opinion it's great cinema. I highly recommend it.
