my week at the movies: ‘Miracle at St. Anna,’ ‘Ghost Town,’ ‘The Duchess,’ ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,’ ‘Blindness,’ ‘Appaloosa,’ ‘Towelhead’

Even though my movie schedule doesn’t look any more jammed than usual, I’m trying to cram stuff in to accommodate my planned absence from press screenings for a week and half starting in the middle of next week. I swear, it’s almost not worth planning even half a vacation, partly a working vacation, for all the forelog before and backlog after it generates...

Miracle at St. Anna [opens wide September 26] is Spike Lee’s new movie. I dunno much about it, except that it’s about black soldiers during WWII and features an awesome cast including Derek Luke, Kerry Washington, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Leguizamo, D.B. Sweeney...

It looks like Ghost is being done up as a comedy in Ghost Town [opens wide September 19]. I know, I know: everyone thinks Ricky Gervais is the shit, but I look forward to any movie starring Greg Kinnear, who is too adorable for words and lights up any movie he appears in.

Keira Knightley gets into corsets -- again -- for The Duchess [opens limited September 19]. Spectacular costumes and British accents? I’m there. Also: Ralph Fiennes plays her husband. Yum.

I don’t know anything about Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist [opens wide October 3] except that that is a wonderful title, and also that it stars Michael Cera, who, if I were 16 again, I’d be madly in love with, he’s so sweet.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m looking forward to Blindness [opens wide September 26], and I’m glad I’ll have to chance to see it before I leave for England. Man, I’m gonna have a lot of reviews to write on the plane.

I’m gonna miss all the press screenings of Appaloosa [opens in New York, Toronto, and Los Angeles September 19, wide October 3], but my plan at the moment is to catch it when it opens here on Friday, so I can review it before it goes wide. I may do a double feature with Towelhead, which is already playing here in NYC but continues to expand, because I’ve been hearing good things about it from my fellow critics.

I know I’m officially Dreading My Best Friend’s Girl, which opens wide September 19 but won’t screen for critics (at least as far as I can determine), but I think I won’t have time to see it. I may have to just keep dreading it until it comes out on DVD.

I sent you an e-mail about this late in August, but I don't know if you received it, remember it or just aren't planning to attend, but there are going to be a couple of screenings of The Midnight Meat Train in New York after all. It will premiere at a place called the Sunshine Cinema, affiliated with Landmark Theatres. The two screenings are Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, at midnight, according to their website.

Yeah, I'm not gonna be bothering to see *Midnight Meat Train.* Certainly not at midnight at a theater that's a pain in the freakin' ass to get to -- and to get home from.

I appreciate the heads-up, though.

I totally get the hassle of trying to get around via public transit that late at night, and in hard places to reach, which is even worse when it's both out of the way and afterhours. Kinda topical for the movie, but then I missed the midnight premiere in Montréal and although I did take the metro to see it, it was for the afternoon showing they'd added afterwards.
