trailer break: ‘Nights in Rodanthe’Take a break from work: watch a movie trailer... I thought about maybe going to a screening of this tomorrow, even though I should be spending the day packing and getting ready to leave at like 4am on Wednesday for my trip to England. And then I discovered that this is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, and I knew I could give it a miss. Because whenever some guy bitches about women supposedly being so mushedly romantic, I point to Nicholas Sparks, who by all apparent evidence has a penis, and yet is the biggest purveyor of snake-oil sentiment this side of Lifetime Television anyway. Nights in Rodanthe opens Friday, September 26. Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

I believe this is what you, MAJ, would call "Relationship Porn", yes?

Hey MAJ - might I suggest you make a list of movies that have great romance in them that AREN'T relationship porn? I'd be interested in what you think qualifies.
I'll even start you off with a classic: Pride and Prejudice (2005).

Good suggestion, Anne-Kari. I'll try to get around to that soon...

Massive insomnia last night has produced the following suggestions:
Say Anything
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Atonement
Persuasion (1995)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
More to come tomorrow, depending on my sleeping patterns. Hope you and Bronxbee are having a kick-ass time!

Another sleepless night has resulted in the following list of:
Films That Are Not Necessarily Romances Per Se But Have Huge Emotional Impact:
You Can Count On Me
Lost In Translation
The Sweet Hereafter
Gone Baby Gone
Empire of the Sun
The Shawshank Redeption
And then some more Films With Great Romance:
Brokeback Mountain
Nicholas Nickleby (2002)
Casablanca
Now, Voyager (ok, that one's going to be a stretch for most but it's a personal favorite)
OK. I'm stopping now - promise.

Hey there MAJ - I know this must be low on your list considering all the catching up you must be dealing with, but have you had further thoughts about the list I proposed? Inquiring geeks want to know.

I haven't had time to think about it.
