my week at the movies: ‘Twilight,’ ‘Good,’ ‘Bolt,’ ‘Australia,’ ‘Four Christmases,’ ‘Transporter 3’

I’m sort of dreading my screening of Twilight (opens in the U.S. on November 21, and in the U.K. on December 19) tonight. I don’t mean the film itself -- though that’s an issue too -- but the scene. It’s going to be a madhouse. I’ve never seen this before, in almost ten years of attending press screenings: the publicist has let us know what time the doors will open so we can begin checking in. I’m not sure whether that’s meant to prevent people from showing up too early, or meant to encourage people to show up early. It’s gonna be crazy.

Yesterday I saw Good (opens in the U.S. on December 31; no U.K. release date has been announced) -- which I’ve already discussed a bit here -- and Bolt (opens in the U.S. on November 21, and in the U.K. on February 13, 2009), which I had wanted to be psyched about but was having some trouble with. Happily, it turns out that I could have been psyched without reservations, and not been disappointed.

I am indeed still unreservedly psyched for Australia (opens wide in the U.S. on November 26, and in the U.K. on December 26). I know, I know: I’ve heard all the rumors about supposedly reshoots and cancelled premieres and last-minute edits, and I don’t care. I’m treasuring my little bit of naive excitement for the movie for one more day, and then I’ll know.

I do suspect that my tender hopes for Four Christmases (opens wide in the U.S. and in the U.K. on November 26) will be thwarted. But you never know.

I expect nothing at all from Transporter 3 (opens wide in the U.S. on November 26, and in the U.K. on December 5) beyond loud action, a couple of dumb one-liners, and a reinforcement of my opinion that Jason Statham is an unappealing thug... or, if he isn’t, he plays one on TV. I love this, though, and by “love” of course I mean “approach with nothing but derision”: the director’s name is Olivier Megaton. Which, you’ll be shocked to learn, is not his real name, but is instead how he apparently feels about the impact he makes upon the world, and that it is something akin to that of an atomic bomb. *snort*
