trailer break: ‘Dostana’
Take a break from work: watch a movie trailer...
Oh my god. It’s a Hindi Bosom Buddies-meets-Three’s Company. (The two guys are pretending to be gay for reasons of real estate: they found a great apartment right on the beach in Miami, but it’s chicks-only. Apparently the landlady feels two gay guys are not a threat to her female tenants.) Or a Hindi I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which is too terrible to think about.
Apparently, what is being billed as India’s first gay comedy isn’t all that gay after all. Also apparently, straight guys pretending to be gay is a universal thing, at least in goofy comedies. I’d like to say this is some sort of indication about a bicuriosity on the part of the men who (typically) make these movies, and the men who go to see them. But that’s probably taking it too far.
This was the No. 6 movie in the U.K. this past weekend, and the top limited release. And, it transpires that now that all the last stragglers of weekend numbers are now in for North America, that it was the second biggest limited release here, with a per-screen average better than that of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
Dostana is now playing in the U.S. and the U.K.

I've seen it last weekend (it's playing in my area) and found it hilarious and with a pretty good message about both sexual orientation tolerance and friendship. I haven't seen Chuck and Larry (you'd have to pay me to watch that) but it's bound to be better because C&L sounded so awful.
Plus, I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but it's delicious and rather unexpected, especially for a Bollywood movie.
