oh. my. gawd! this is TEH AWESOMENESS!
oh, how i'd love to see all those episodes again (especially TB and PD)...

Well, bronxbee, I just ordered a ton of them, and already own some of them, and shall be blogging about them in the near future. Seeing as how we're in such close physical proximity, you'll probably end up watching them with me on a Friday night or Sunday morning.

Ah, so you did say a few things about SJA.
The proper term here should be "serial" or "story", incidentally. Each serial is made up of component episodes, so it's -- well.
Do you intend to discuss the missing episodes? Curious. I suppose they are available as soundtrack recordings.
posted by MaryAnn (Fri Nov 21 08, 6:49PM)
Yeah, maybe I'll change "episode" to "story." I picked up the language that wikipedia is using, but "story" does make more sense.
How can I discuss episodes that are missing? Except to say that they're missing?
In any case, there are certainly more than enough extant stories to keep me busy for quite a while.

You've never heard of recons, then?
http://www.recons.com
Actually, I don't think you'd like them much. You've said before that you regard 60s Who as too childish, and watching still pictures set to a tape-recorded soundtrack can be a drag even for those of us who appreciate the era.
posted by MaryAnn (Sat Nov 22 08, 5:31PM)
It's interesting that people are doing that, but it would be tough to review something like that.

OK, I have the 25th Anniversary Five Doctors, just got The Time Warrior and Ark in Space to further research Sarah Jane and Harry for fanfic purposes (ahem), and now I'm listening to a Big Finish audio of Eight'n'Ace and thinking I should invest in one of Sylvester's stories. I saw them all when they first came out but haven't see any since. So, fellow FlickFilosopher fan followers, which of the Eighth Doctor's stories that are available should I buy?
Now don't say all because I'd probably do it. I have very little fiscal responsibility when it comes to the Doctor.
And MaryAnn--do you get a cut if we click through to Amazon from here?
posted by MaryAnn (Tue Dec 02 08, 7:58PM)
Yeah, I do, and it doesn't cost you anything extra. So it does help me if you click through from FlickFilosopher.com and subsequently buy from Amazon, even what you buy is not the item you clicked through from.
For McCoy, it seems they are releasing them in order of awesomeness, but for starters, I'd watch the Dalek story and *Ghost Light.*
Ace is, by the way, made of awesome.
posted by Tonio Kruger (Tue Dec 02 08, 8:07PM)
If I had to choose, I'd go with "Remembrance of the Daleks", since that's the one story that most lingers in my mind from the McCoy years. I'm not really all that fond of the Daleks but I always had a soft spot for this story, what with its obvious racial subtext, its reference to a pre-Brigadier Brigadier, its rather ominous nursery rhyme and, of course, my favorite bit: the Catholic Schoolgirl from Hell (who, among other things, seems like an obvious inspiration for Elle). It's not quite as classic as the better episodes of the Tom Baker years but it's better than a lot of the stories that came after.

Thank you both. I'm off to Amazon, via FF!

And, conversely, if you click through from here and add the item to your cart, but don't buy it right away, MaryAnn will still get a cut when you finally do decide to buy.

OMG, I just realized I mistyped (misthought?) above! Of course I know Sylvester is the Seventh doctor!
And all y'all were too kind to slap me with a dead mackerel, which I totally deserved.
MaryAnn, the only thing I don't like about your site is that the comments are not modifiable!

Hey, Mary Ann. I just started watching the current Doctor Who, from season 1( it just sarted to air in my country recently), and I never saw an episode of the old series. Ever. Do you think I can still enjoy it?
posted by MaryAnn (Wed Dec 03 08, 9:50AM)
FYI: I think you need to make that purchase within 30 days, though.
Tough to say. Perhaps. The old show is not *about* the Doctor the way that the new one is (which is why there's so much fan fiction -- people felt the need to fill in those missing pieces). Rent a couple and give 'em a try.

"Rent a couple and give 'em a try."
I doubt I can find a place where I can rent it here in Portugal. We suck ):
But from what I've seen so far, it's been a thought provoking show with consistent quality(something too rare on tv these days) and amazing actors. I don't get all the references, but I can always look them up.
I just might have found a replacement for Buffy. (right along with a great spin-off).

Portugal? I didn't realize. (I get very few readers from non-English-as-a-first-language countries, so I'd never have assumed that.) You could buy a cheap one from Amazon UK and give it a shot. You won't find the same production qualities -- the FX are often quite laughably bad -- but it does feature lots of provocative science-fictional ideas. And if you can read between the lines to see the subtext in the Doctor and his relationships with his companions, it can be a helluva lotta fun.

I saw "An Unearthly Child" recently and was amazed at how little of it was about the doctor. It took some getting used to.

The DVD of The Next Doctor is available for pre-order from Amazon UK already. Supposedly also contains Doctor Who at the Proms. I don't know if that means the whole Proms program or just David's video segment. Hoping it's the whole program as I listened to it on BBC Iplayer when it was available and loved it.
I'm sure I will have seen the Christmas special on Youtube prior to the January 19 release date, but I'm not about to wait on SciFi or the box set of the 2009 specials to watch it on the telly!

Mary Ann, I've been away for a while and just discovered you were a Dr. Who expert. Would you mind telling me something that I missed along the way? (It was a long dry spell in Dallas until the Christopher Ecclestons and David Tennants recently started, hooray hooray, and I never caught a number in the distant past since they were on so late at night before I had a VCR.) The Doctor is quite touchy about his entire race being obliterated in a great war. When did this happen, and how? I could look it up online and plow through tons of information, but could you just sum it up in a quick sentence or two? I'd be ever so grateful. It's wonderful now that I've been able to see the two newest-but-one Doctors and this issue seems to inform his mindset and actions.
And don't you think the recent episodes have been the best EVER?

The Time War in which Gallifrey was destroyed happened somewhere in between the last time we saw the Doctor -- that would be the Paul McGann Doctor in San Francisco in 1999 (in the 1996 Fox TV movie) -- and when we met him again at the same time Rose did, in London in 2005 (the Christopher Eccleston Doctor). We've learned very few details about the war, but since it appears that the Doctor has just regenerated when he meets Rose, we can at least assume that it was the McGann Doctor who fought in the war.
Which is why I want a Time War movie starring Paul McGann. :->

Hey, MaryAnn. I'm on my way to watch "The Idiot's Lantern". So far, I've loved every single episode of this new series( I still haven't watched any episode of the old series. Maybe someday I will). Thank you so much for introducing me to this wonderfull show. If I didn't read your blog, I might not have given it even a try. I also read one of your mini-reviews every time i finish a episode.
On a sidenote: I loved the appearances of Simmon Pegg, Anthony Head( please someone tell me "Ripper will still get made) and that girl from Moonlight whom I shamefully can't remember the name.
Do you think I can start watching Torchwood now or should finish the season first?
posted by MaryAnn (Sun Jan 18 09, 3:38PM)
You should wait to watch *Torchwood* till you after you've seen Jack's introduction and (initial) departure from *Doctor Who,* at the end of Christopher Eccleston's series. Sounds like you're already past that point.

Whew! I'm so glad I asked about the Gallifrey War. You've saved me a lot of frustration, trying to find out about it. And so it appears I ain't missed that much after all. I should have more faith in my local PBS station.

Does anyone know if they are planning to release any more of the old series on DVD? I want to see ALL of Sarah Jane's stories again, and only half of them are out.
posted by Adam S (Mon May 04 09, 11:23PM)
There's an informative site run by the folks that prep the classic Doctor Who episodes for DVD release at http://www.restoration-team.co.uk/
They don't specify USA release dates, however.
The next few titles up for release include THE WAR GAMES and THE DEADLY ASSASSIN, TWG being the first time we meet the Timelords, and TDA featuring Tom Baker returning to Gallifrey to assassinate the President! (This story kicks off the Doctor's involvement with the Gallifreyan presidency which continued in THE INVASION OF TIME, THE FIVE DOCTORS, THE TRIAL OF A TIMELORD, and REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS.)
I hope that they will in some way release SHADA (the missing Tom Baker story) on DVD. It was after all written by Douglas Adams, and if you get the opportunity to see the 1992 video release (with linking narration by Tom Baker to fill in the production gaps), by all means do so. The story has significant Timelord elements in it. SHADA was more recently reworked as a Paul McGann story with animation featuring Romana as the President of Gallifrey!
Also, where are THE GUARDIANS in the new series???
posted by Weimlady (Tue May 05 09, 3:15PM)
Thanks for the info, Adam S, but since my last post I decided to take a chance both on old videotapes and my old VCR and have purchased most of the missing Sarah Jane episodes in that format. And so far, both the tapes and the machine have come through for me. Watched the first three episodes of Invasion of the Dinosaurs this morning--what a GREAT story! And all I remembered about it from watching it 20 some years ago was how rubbish the dinosaurs were. (They were. They truly were.) Ignore that, though, and the story is wonderful. Young Sarah Jane just getting to know the Doctor. *sigh*

Oh rats, wish you could modify posts on here, because I forgot to mention that the Monster of Peladon is the only Sarah Jane story I haven't managed to get my hands on yet. Most of the old videotapes are reasonably priced on Amazon--$15-$25 range--but for some reason, the available copies of MoP start in the low $80s. ??? Why would that be? Is it that rare?
