as i recall, it was peter davison who originally said that an actor should never play the doctor for more than three years.

Davison said that about himself only, I believe -- that he himself did not want to stay on for more than three years.

But he later regretted that decision, because he now says he only started to get a real grasp on the character in his very last story. Imagine how great a fourth year of Doctor No. 5 could have been...

Sorry, can't do that. Because it would inevitably lead to thinking of how great a fourth (full) year of Doctor No. 10 could have been, and then I'll be sobbing again....
