watch it: Ewok celebration

God, it really does feel like we blew up the Death Star, doesn’t it?

It is a nice fantasy ending to the story.

Unfortunately, the pieces of the Death Star would have fallen across Endor and caused widespread devastation, and there is a strong liklihood that the now leaderless Empire would descend into chaos.

I'm not saying that will happen to Obama (that would be silly), but I am saying that fairy tale endings don't have to deal with crushing reality, and Obama does.

All of the euphoria now is merely setting Obama up for perceived failure when the fairy tale doesn't come true.

Perfect. :) Watching MSNBC's coverage at 11 p.m. last night, as soon as I had enough control over my faculties to speak, I said to my husband, "You know what this reminds me of?" And he goes, "The end of Return of the Jedi?" Exactly so.

For many, the euphoria is over the historically unprecedented victory itself. Even G.W. Bush acknowledged today that Obama's achievement is worthy of celebration. For others, it's that plus a major blueshift at the Federal level that makes them happy.

There are plenty of euphoric people who nevertheless aren't deluded that utopia starts now.

i always thought luke should have taken his father out of the fright suit. burning plastic produces lots of air pollution including dioxins and other carcinogens.

What? The special edition ending? C'mon... the original is much superior.

Sorry, AJP, never happened in the expanded universe, and even George Lucas says otherwise. (In other words, it's probably physically likely, but in the canon of the story? Never happened. You wanna complain about that? Complain about something the size of a small moon moving faster than light, while at the same time biotech is at most a century beyond us. Or lasers being a.visible and b.slower than bullets.)

:p

Although, if it helps your sense of being a killjoy, in the expanded universe a whole whack of stormtroopers showed up at the Coruscant scene a moment later and slaughtered the celebrating crowd.

There are plenty of euphoric people who nevertheless aren't deluded that utopia starts now.

Yes, I hope that's true. Because already Obama is stacking his deck with ex-Clinton people, which is hardly a harbinger for change.

I agree, but it lacks the scale of the new version, which indicates celebrations all over the galaxy.

Yes, I often thought that, as well. For starters, there'd be a whole bunch of Imperial commanders with Star Destroyers at their beck and call who'd be real loathe to give up their power...

And then a hand with long red-varnished fingernails reaches into the ashes of Vader's pyre and pulls out his ring as evil laughter sounds-- no, hold on, I'm thinking of something else. :)
