U.K. box office: ‘Twilight’ doesn’t suck

Yeah, I used that headline when the teen vampire movie opened in North America, too. Look, the holiday in the middle of the week has really thrown my schedule off, and I just want to get a quick look at last weekend’s U.K. box office numbers before this new weekend is over:

1. Twilight: £2.5 million (NEW)
2. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa: £1.9 million (3rd week; drops 25%)
3. Four Christmases: £1.06 million (4th week; drops 6%)
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still: £1 million (2nd week; drops 63%)
5. The Tale of Despereaux: £.56 (NEW)

(actual numbers, not estimates)

Apparently Stephanie Meyer’s novels are not as huge in the U.K. as they are here in the U.S., so that £2.5 million number must look good, even if it wasn’t the kind of blockbuster opening in the U.K. other flicks have enjoyed this year (and that might have been expected after its enormous opening the U.S.). We’ll see whether all the (fewer) Twilight fans headed out to see it on opening weekend this weekend: I’m guessing the movie is going to drop like a stone.

Kinda like how The Day the Earth Stood Still did: it took a drop comparable to the one it took in the U.S., once everyone got a look at how terrible it is. On the flip side, Four Christmases is doing as well in the U.K. as it is over here. I suppose family agitta is pretty universal, especially during the holidays.
