question of the day: What’s your favorite cold-weather comfort movie?

It’s 17 degress and snowing in the Bronx right now -- but it could be worse: Bismarck hit 44 below this morning. It’s even down into the 40s (above zero, that is) in Florida and Southern California.

The first person who says, “So what happened to global warming?” gets to wear the Dunce Cap of Proud Ignorance and sit in the corner. The rest of us are going to talk about this:

What’s your favorite cold-weather comfort movie?

Maybe it’s a movie set in wintry locale that reminds you how snug you are indoors. Maybe it’s a movie set in a tropical locale that reminds you how much warmer you could be. Maybe it’s something that has nothing to do with weather at all but you simply love to curl up with it on a cold night.

When I think “winter movies,” the first one that pops into my head is Fargo. The frigid weather really is a character in itself... well, the cold weather and the sangfroid with which everyone deals with it. When Marge comes back into the house on a bitter cold (and still dark) morning to inform her husband that her “prowler needs a jump,” you get the feeling that this happens every morning, and yet they never lose their low-key cheerfulness about the chore.
