‘Burn Notice’ returns tonight

It still seems too much like a summer show to be debuting a new season in January, but USA doesn’t care what I think: They’re bringing back the warm-breeze, snack-food spy series Burn Notice tonight at 10pm Eastern.

Don’t get me wrong: I love the show, I think it’s the perfect blend of comedy and action and character, and I’m excited to see how our hero Michael is gonna escape getting blown up, as he appears to have been when last we saw him. But it’s all so perfectly, wonderfully fluffy and turn-your-brain-off without being brainless that it’s been ideally suited for the July runs its been enjoying previously: it’s the perfect show for when it’s too hot to think, not for when it’s too cold to crawl out from under the blankets.

Then again, perhaps the tropical Miami setting will be cheering at this time of year.

Also: The show features Bruce Campbell, which is always a Good Thing.

Now, USA, in an effort to be more green -- which I applaud -- didn’t send out screener DVDs of the premiere episode: they sent us critics a link to a digital press kit, which includes streaming video of the premiere. And I know I said I was gonna watch it so I could review it. And I tried -- I really did. But the video is so tiny -- smalled than a YouTube video -- and not enlargeable, and sitting hunched over my laptop for 45 minutes is not my idea of the best way to watch TV. If I could have at least made it fill the laptop screen, it might have been okay.

So I’m stuck having to watch it with everyone else tonight. And that’s fine. And I have every confidence that this new season of Burn Notice will be just as enjoyable as the previous ones (unlike some other series I could mention). Because it’s not trying to be smart or clever: it just effortlessly does it.

very excited! i'm actually thinking i'm in the mood for a nice tropical vacation and this is perfect, because i won't actually have to go out into the sun with sticky oily sun block which always misses a spot, and that sand sticks to, and those pretty fruity drinks always have bees buzzing around them interfering with your sipping, and no matter how lovely your sarong and bathing top, you're roasting hot.

whereas, michael is just hot and bruce campbell is way cool.

Did anyone ever see the US version of Touching Evil? It was Jeffrey Donovan's first USA Network show, a couple years ago, and it was pretty amazing -- nowhere near as snarky or carefree as Burn Notice, it was more of a serious kind of thing, and very good, even without The Chin.

I actually didn't take notice (no pun intended) of this show until a couple of days ago, and I've been watching the marathon on USA all day.
I wish Netflix had this available as one of their TiVo streams... I just got a TiVo and I'm lovin' that feature.

Rykker: If it helps any, Hulu.com has had episodes of Burn Notice on their site for quite a while now. (They aren't there today, but apparently return tomorrow, along with the new episode.)

So, what did everyone think of last nights episode? I thought it was a great start to the back half of the season. It was nice to see Michael take a case that he got personally involved in, and I loved the stuff about setting up a holding cell for those guys. All in all I'm looking forward to chipping away at the case of who tried to kill Michael.

i almost didn't watch Burn Notice, whichi s the type of program almost always up my alley, because donovan had been in Touching Evil, which i hated so much ... it was based on a far superior british program which starred the always delicious, completely incomparable Robson Green. i hated donovan's looks for the part and i hated the way (as is almost always the case) the americanized version turned out.

but as michael -- he's perfect; and the show is perfect; and he's lucky to work with the incomparable bruce campbell. so i like the show a lot.
