another reason to follow me on Twitter and Facebook

Yesterday as I exited my screening of Hotel for Dogs, I was struck with a brainstorm: I could use my cell phone to text a status update to Twitter and Facebook with my instant reaction to the film. So I did:

MaryAnn has checked out of the "Hotel for Dogs" -- her stay was silly but sweet.

But I won’t post these here. So if you’d like to get my first quickie feedback on movies the moment they’re over -- before I can post a stoplight reaction here -- then start following me on Twitter or friend me on Facebook. (Facebook fan pages don’t seem to offer a “status” option, so you won’t find these screening reactions on my Facebook fan page.)

Also: I plan on Twittering my way across London when I visit there next month (more on that trip soon). There seems to be some debate about whether my British mobile provider can interact nicely with Facebook, so I don’t know if those on-the-fly status updates will make it to Facebook, but you’ll definitely find them on Twitter. As with my trip to England in September, I’ll be blogging about the February trip here too. But those quickie Twitters will only be on Twitter

MaryAnn - you can set it up so all your Twits (except for @replies) go directly to your facebook account. It is set up through facebook. Of course, I did it so long ago, I can't remember how! [this is how I do it.]

I've also heard of a service called Ping which does status updates on several social media sites simultaneously.

I remember at least the last time I was in Britain (briefly) my Netherlands-based T-Mobile phone found it very easy to get on Facebook through its browser, so there's always that (and it says something about North America that my roaming data charges there were still better than my data charges for my Canadian phone in Canada....)

I'll have to look into that.

I use Ping, but you can't text stuff to Ping -- it's all Web-based.

My cheapie British mobile doesn't have Web access. And now I learn that Orange may charge an international text-messaging rate to Twitter's UK number, instead of letting me use the free texts that come with my plan. That would suck, but I won't learn for sure how I'll be charged until I try it when I get there. (Orange's customer support just told me by email that I "may" be charged the international rate. And I'm like, "May? Don't you know? How can you not know?")

As much as love your reviews (and I really do), MA.J., MySpace is as far as I go.

Um, what is Twitter ?

Twitter slaps MySpace in the face, and then microblogs about it.

Yikes, even social networking sites are getting aggressive. What happenend to the world ?
