trailer break: ‘Race to Witch Mountain’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

Someone pitched this as The Rock Versus Area 51, I’m thinking.

Or maybe Last Taxi to the End of the World?

I wanted to be able to like this, because I have fond memories of the 1975 flick Escape to Witch Mountain, but after seeing this trailer, I suspect I shall be disappointed. It couldn’t possibly look any more pedestrian unless, perhaps, there was a bit with a dog farting in it.

Screenwriter Matt Lopez wrote the dumb Bedtime Stories, which does not inspire hope in me, and his cowriter Mark Bomback wrote Live Free or Die Hard, which complete fails to capture the sense of what made that franchise so great to start with. So I’m really glum over the prospects of this.

Also: How do Carla Gugino and Ciaran Hinds end up in this junk? Shouldn’t that be a crime?

But oh my goodness, but AnnaSophia Robb is the cutest alien ever, ain’t she?

Race to Witch Mountain opens in the U.S. on March 13 and in the U.K. on April 10.

It's been awhile since I saw the original, but wasn't the basis of the movie about the kids trying to figure who they are, why they have these powers and how to get back home? Looks to me like it's now an hour and half long car chase with Boba Fett and The Rock. Craptastic.

And since the movie industry only wants to put out '70s and '80s remakes, I guess we get to look forward to a couple more years of having our childhood rehashed and destroyed.

I agree. I must admit that I'm feeling a little apprehensive, given the fact that I will no doubt be dragged into our local theatre by my children and be forced to sit through what amounts to be a definite crap-shoot of a film. You've got decent acting (who the heck is Alex Ludwig?), but the possibility of a trite and sappy script.
As far as AnnaSophia Robb is concerned, my kids grew up on her films and I have witnessed them myself, ad nauseam. Fortunately her acting, for one with very little formal training, has been at least tolerable, even astonishing at times. With the addition of "The Reaping", "Sleepwalking", and even "Have Dreams, Will Travel" and the obligatory "Bridge to Terabithia"- all of which really aren't the greatest films ever made, but still artistic in their own right, I thought what was taking place was the maturing of one brilliant and yes, beautiful little girl into someone destined for a shelf full of oscars. Unfortunately, this little foray into remake-land has set her back in regards to that vision and one can only hope that she regains her artistic composure and integrity and begins to focus once again on the art and not the dough.
As I exit the theatre after sitting through "Witch" next weekend, I'm really kind of hoping I don't feel like wearing the popcorn box on my head in an effort to avoid identification. I'm really kind of hoping...
