bias update

obsession: the plays of William Shakespeare (cuz he never goes out of style)
boyfriend: Peter Davison in The Last Detective at the moment (but pretty much forever in anything)
psyched: absolutely nothing (the next month or so is a movie wasteland)
dreading: Knowing (see above about cinematic wastelands)
enemy: everyone responsible for Fired Up! (for trying to pass off such disgusting oafs as heroes)

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

I consider my current obsession with Shakespeare movie-related, not only because so many of his plays have ended up on the big screen. He was the consummate teller of stories in motion, full of action and intrigue and murder and romance. He’d have loved movies, and he probably would have written some great ones.

Very soon -- I promise -- I’ll share my reactions to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew that I saw in London last month. This Friday night I’m going to a production of The Winter’s Tale at Brooklyn Academy of Music. And I’ve been reading -- studying, really -- the plays I’ve been seeing on stage, and wow, that just makes me even more obsessed.

I'm going to see this production of The Winter's Tale when it transfers to London as part of the Bridge Project, so I hope it's good as I've already got the ticket (and for The Cherry Orchard also.) I'm also going to see the RSC's take on The Winter's Tale later this year.

(What was that reality show? "Bear with Me"?!)

I still haven't got far in reading Love's Labours Lost - despite a number of attempts - yet I found the RSC production last year to be very accessible (and it included a bear.) I think the RSC initiative to get kids performing Shakespeare, or - next best - watching it live, instead of reading it in class, is an excellent idea.

we are also scheduled to see the RSC "Winter's Tale" in september/october. i love the idea of kids actually getting involved in performing shakespeare instead of being forced to drone it in class, or read it on your own...

and the LLL with the bear -- outstanding. shakespeare involves bears (or productions of shakespeare have involved bears) in several plays. best stage directions ever: "Exit pursued by a bear."

Have you heard that David Tennant and company will film "Hamlet" in June? Apparently Oliver Ford Davies made a comment to a newspaper about a three week shoot.. less than a movie, but more than just the stage show, I believe was the quote.

If this is true (and I'm not going to believe it until the DVD is in my hands) I will be so thrilled. I saw the production without David in London. I loved it (particularly Mr. Davies), but I went to see DAVID!

PS. I DID get to see Derek Jacobi in 'Twelfth Night', so the trip was completely and totally worth it!

"Twelfth Night" with Derek Jacobi WAS great -- I got to see it last Friday! Angel, was it you that mentioned the scene where Jacobi/Malvolio pulls out his pocket watch and stares at it, puzzled, for a moment? I was so tickled by that, and I realized I'd read a comment about it somewhere... There was a wide range of ages in the audience (which was nice) and I thought surely I was not the only one who briefly thought, "I... am... the Master!" Plus, it also starred [They Keep Killing] Suzie, who looked gorgeous and not at all insane/undead...
