weekend open thread: almost April Fool's edition

Got a lot of catching up with reviews to do -- 12 Rounds definitely; not sure yet if I have anything special to say about Haunting in Connecticut; plus some indies and foreigns and DVDs -- but I'm taking a bit of a break for part of today to hang out with some friends. Then it's back to cracking the whip on myself...

I realized last night that I no longer have Battlestar Galactica blogging to look forward to each Saturday morning. I need to find something else to replace it, I guess. I'm thinking maybe Kings blogging: the first two episodes were really intriguing... though since that airs on Sunday, that's not gonna give me something to post that's a reason for people to visit here on Saturday. Maybe I should blog about old Saturday morning cartoons...

Anyway, feel free to chat among yourselves, or ask me whatever you want to ask... within reason, of course. I absolutely refuse to share the secret recipe for my famous egg salad.

I haven't noticed you blogging anything pro or con about Dollhouse... it might be worth a try. Not the best show ever but it has two things going for it: Joss Whedon, for one. But also: Helo! In one episode he beats the crap out of three guys with guns. Then, not 2 episodes later, he beats the crap out of FIVE guys. He's just beating the shit out of people every episode and it is awesome.

Wondering if you had plans to continue your Doctor Who fan fiction?

I second old Saturday morning cartoons. The 90s was a golden age ("Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"). I was so lucky as a kid.

Just for fun...What are the best and worst sci fi flicks of that last ten years?

My pics are "Sunshine"(best) and "Battlefield Earth" (worst).

I too am mourning the loss of Battlestar. Sniff, sob. I'm still watching Dollhouse because I Want To Believe (in anything Joss does) so I'm going to watch until they yank it off the air. It is getting a bit better, and I am intrigued despite some very, very big problems with the whole thing.... I have high hopes anyway.

MAJ, I will get that egg salad recipe from you someday. Mark my words! I have recipes to tempt you with, perhaps we can make a secret exchange?

Other than that, I'm smoke-free for almost a solid week now, and have still not killed anyone or smashed anything against the wall. Yipee.

Ms. Flick, did you review all the Dr. Who episodes you wanted to review? Hadn't you gotten some of the classic episodes (Pyramid of Mars, Curse of Fatal Death, the one with exploding penguins, et al) awhile back?

I stopped by specifically to see what MAJ thinks of "Kings". I think it's mythic, ambitious and beautiful... and also frightening.

Yeah, another vote for "Dollhouse." Like NBC's "Journeyman," it's paying for our patience: things are really starting to get good. (Good enough for my wife and I to start having Dollhouse Parties with our friends.)

I've watched one episode of *Dollhouse* and was wildly unimpressed. I'll probably watch a few movie before deciding to abandon it.

*Doctor Who* fanfic: Yes, I am planning to finish (and then post all my old stuff, and then maybe write more).

Ah, *Doctor Who* to replace BSG on Saturdays! An excellent idea. I think we have a winner...

Best and worst sci fi flicks of that last ten years sounds like a good idea for an essay...

Anne-Kari: congrats on the smoke-free-ness!

I'd give Dollhouse another try. The word is that FOX wanted the first few episodes to be open for people to jump in so there wasn't a lot of plot development allowed. Give episode 5 and then 6 a shot. They seemed to be where everything started to click.

Eliza Dushku is a fine actress, very good in Buffy...but I don't think she has the range that Dollhouse requires from it's leading role. We shall see, at least it sounds like the scripts are starting to come around after the disaster that was the first 4 episodes.

Haha I used to DREAD your BSG blog... because the episode wasn't on in the UK till the Tuesday and everytime I visited the site I'd have to resist the temptation to open it.

Anne-Kari, I second the congratulations for being smoke-free. My mom is going through a lot of serious health issues in her retirement caused by a lifetime of smoking. I've also got respiratory problems related to her smoking when I was a child. I'm very angry at myself for not trying harder to convince her to stop a long time ago. Keep up the good work; it's extremely tough at first, but just like maintaining a healthy weight - it'll save you and the people you love a lot of pain, time, and money in the long run.

You definitely should. It doesn't have near the amount of polish Firefly did right out of the gate, but the potential is there.

"Just for fun...What are the best and worst sci fi flicks of that last ten years?

Great weekend open thread topic. I am a great fan of sci fi, but no great connoisseur. I may change my answer after I search IMDB for a minute or two, but two movies immediately came to mind which will compete for best sci fi flick of the last ten years:

Best: "Serenity" or "Man from Earth"

Note that I have not seen "Sunshine".

As for the worst, one profound failure is jumping, waving its arms screaming, "Pick me! Pick me!" I am hesitant because I have only given this just a moment's thought, but I feel confident enough in my choice:

Worst: "Babylon A.D."

I can barely argue with your choice of "Battlefield Earth" and perhaps if I had not spent so many hours MST3000ening it, I would agree. But "Battlefield Earth" has provided me and my friends with countless hours of entertainment while we have no intention of ever again seeing, thinking about, or bothering to ridicule "Babylon A.D."

Oh...and what I logged on to post in the first place -

"Snark: It’s Mean, It’s Personal, and It’s Ruining Our Conversation" - a book by David Denby.

Discuss.

Oh, you must, you must!

"Snark: It’s Mean, It’s Personal, and It’s Ruining Our Conversation" - a book by David Denby.

If we could make snark the basis of our economy, I'd be so happy.

Yes, please, more Doctor Who commentary! I'm watching all the classic episodes available on Netflix, and it would be so fun to read what you have to say about them.

Right now I'm down for changing the basis of our economy to anything I can yank out of my ass:) I only listened to the guy talk for a few minutes, but I get the idea that he was directing his attacks at online, personality-driven editorializing by those who treat the opposition with zero respect and create nothing new with their lazy approach to journalism. I am just summing up the best that I can remember, but he did seem like he was going out of his way to make some very subtle distinctions, so I don't know if I got his point or not.

"Oh, you must, you must!" - Newbs

Oh, I will:)

@ amanohyo: Thanks for your words of support. I've got two small kids and they are a big reason for me quitting. Although I never, ever smoked around them or in the house, I know what a terrible example it set. They're very happy that I've quit.

9 days and counting!

My mother gave up smoking (although she was never a heavy smoker) and then used to threaten us with starting again if we misbehaved. That worked very well as a deterrent!

Sending 'be strong' vibes your way, Anne-Kari :-)

Yes, Anne-Kari, good luck with the non-smoking aspect of your life. I know from my friends' experiences that it's not an easy thing to do.

Caroline asked:

Wondering if you had plans to continue your Doctor Who fan fiction?

Erm, well, while waiting for MJ to write hers, you could read mine! Up to four stories in the saga now, working on #5. Click on my username to go to story #4, or just go to Teaspoon or Fanfiction.net and search for Weimlady. That's me all over!

I'm doing the same thing, Kimberly! Maybe we should leave secret notes on our Netflix discs somehow to see if we get the same ones! LOL! Just sent back Planet of Evil.
