Red Nose Day 09! win some Red Nose goodies

Winners of my Red Nose gear are: Gail, Martha, and Lynn. Thanks to everyone who donated!

Remember that sketch from a while back featuring David Tennant as a schoolteacher and Catherine Tate as his annoying student? (You can watch it here.) It’s from the 2007 installment of Comic Relief, a British charity effort to raise money to fight poverty around the world. And this year’s Comic Relief is coming up on Friday, March 13 -- David Tennant will be appearing again.

Of course, you have to be in the U.K. to see it -- it’ll air on BBC One and Two from 7pm to 1:30am -- but I’m sure the rest of us will get the best snippets via YouTube soon after.

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

In the meantime, though, you -- the loyal and dedicated and wonderful readers of FlickFilosopher.com -- and I are gonna do our part to help out. People all over the U.K. are getting in on the fun with Red Nose Day -- also Friday, March 13 -- by doing something funny for money, and donating the cash to Red Nose Day. I’ve dressed up like a loon -- as you can see to the left -- for this worthy cause. But you don’t even have to do that. All you have to do is donate a bit of dough via the FlickFilosopher Red Nose Day page. You don’t need to be in the U.K. to donate -- just use your credit card. (Be aware that if you’re not in the U.K., your credit card company will likely charge a currency conversion fee of up to 3 percent for the transaction.) And you don’t have to donate a ton of cash, either: a little goes a long way.

Can the readers of FlickFilosopher.com raise £5,000? I bet we can!

Please give as much as you can -- everyone who donates via the FlickFilosopher Red Nose Day page will be entered to win one of three Red Nose prize packs: a red nose, a T-shirt, a pen, a pin, and Post-it notes. (You can see what all this stuff looks like in the Red Nose Shop.) If you’re in the U.K., you can buy stuff online in the Red Nose Shop or in shops including Sainbury’s, T.K. Maxx, Oxfam, and others. I picked up all these goodies in London last month -- the proceeds go to Red Nose Day, of course, so the winners can consider that another donation to the cause in their honor -- and I’m delighted to be able to share them with you.

I got the ball rolling with a donation of £25. When you donate, drop me an email so I’ll know it’s you in the “My Donors” list on my Red Nose Day page. And leave a message on my wall there, too!

A few rules:

1) There’s no minimum donation required for entry into the giveaway, but be a sport and give at least £5 (about US$7.50 at the moment).

2) I’ll ship prizes to anyone, anywhere, as long as you have a mailing address I can send them to. Winners are responsible for any customs duties they may incur if my prize package has to cross borders. (The overall value of the package is only about $25, though, so it’s not much.)

3) Don’t forget to drop me an email after you donate.

4) Deadline to donate is whenever Red Nose Day stops accepting donations, or March 31, whichever is sooner.

You're familiar with the work of Morecambe and Wise?

I wouldn't say "familiar." I know who they are and I've seen a bit of their stuff.

I ended up with a M&W t-shirt because the others were all so freakin' *huge* -- maybe all the smaller sizes were sold out by the time I got to the TK Maxx to buy mine. I would have prefered one of the Beatles shirts, but I would have been swimming in it, and I'm not exactly tiny.

The shirts I have to give away are: one with an 80s Madonna with a red nose (size women's large); one with the Beatles with red noses (size unisex large); and one M&W shirt like the one I'm wearing in the photo (size unisex medium; I'm wearing a unisex small). I'd say they're all running at least one size bigger than the label -- but maybe they're not preshrunk. I'll let you know what happens when I wash mine for the first time. :->

There was a M&W tribute show on over Christmas in which various comedians sang the duo's praises. Eddie Izzard was asked about his description of George Clooney and Brad Pitt as "the Morecambe and Wise of the thievery world" in 'Ocean's Thirteen' and said that the line actually came from Steven Soderbergh, who's apparently a big Anglophile. It's nice to hear they're not totally unknown in the States, as those of us who are British and over 35 have an affection for them built into our genes. In fact a M&W special from 1971 turned out to be the funniest thing on TV over Christmas (which just shows how dismal the schedule was).

FYI--I donated and then got a call from my credit card company wanting to verify that the charge was valid. Apparently fraudsters are masquerading as charities these days. *sigh* And it isn't just that it's international, although that probably didn't help. When I donated to Headway Essex it didn't trigger a fraud call from HSBC.

I swear, if he were shilling for puppy-kicking charities, I would get my wallet out.

Apparently fraudsters are masquerading as charities these days.

I'm sure that's true -- though it's definitely not the case with Red Nose Day -- but it's probably also true that if you don't usually make purchases/charges in another currency, it might look like a fraudulent charge to your credit card company.

Mimi said: "I swear, if he were shilling for puppy-kicking charities, I would get my wallet out."

Ain't it the truth, ain't it the truth.

And I in no way intended to cast aspersions on the validity of Red Nose Day with my post about being called by my credit card company to verify the charge. Just wanted to let people know it could happen so they don't panic if they donate & then get a call from the credit card guardians.

I gave at the Red Nose Day site the other day (to get my red nose - http://www.dpsinfo.com/images/clip/rednose.poster.jpg) and it was no problem. It's a spiffy charity.

He's still not shilling for puppy-kicking charities, but he has an autographed Doctor Who-themed painting up for auction on Ebay UK, all proceeds going to Accord Hospice. Current bid is 1500 pounds as I post this. Bidding closes May 14, 2009. Go drop a few thou on a good cause and get a painting (that will probably only appreciate with time and David's continued success) to boot.
