trailer break: ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ teaserTake a break from work: watch a trailer... This must be one of the great trailers of all time. Just that tease in the beginning, showing us mere glimpses of the monster, the shadow and the silhouette of his horned head. And then it speaks! I didn’t have any idea what the monsters should sound like, but that sounds about right. Cool! And then: Oh, it’s Max in his monster jammies! It’s Max with his crown! Man, it’s like being a kid again and reading a favorite bedtime story. It might sound silly, because of course it all looks like how Where the Wild Are should look, but it makes me think of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth and some of the other dark fantasy movies of my childhood. Maybe it’s that the monsters look like giant puppets... What is that song? “Children don’t grow up / Our bodies get bigger / But our hearts don’t know”? Wonderful! Perfect! The trailer is sooo Spike Jonze-y that I wonder if Jonze cut it himself (directors usually don’t do that). It all makes me very hopeful that the film will be as grim as the book. With the script by Jones and Dave Eggers, I have even more hope that however they’ve expanded on Maurice Sendak, it will all work. Is this going to be, like, a heartbreaking work staggering geekness? Where the Wild Things Are opens in the U.S. on October 16; no U.K. release date has been announced. support

That's an Arcade Fire song, "Wake Up". Just a lovely trailer. One of the best I've ever seen.

While I'm hesitant to judge a movie by its trailer, I'm not so sure. Wasn't Max made the King because he was WILD, not because he was angst-y? I'm not the first person to make this comment, I agree with it.

That song is Wake Up from The Arcade Fire off there first record, The Funeral. I suggest that if you like the song you buy the record as the whole record is shaped with songs of that calibur. I always knew monsters sounded like Tony Soparano.

I don't know...
I think that looks awful. I hate the song, for one. Looks to me like a really cornball "expansion" of the original, very short, book. I think the trailer already gave too much away, as most people would be wondering how the monsters would be done. While I agree with the use of suits over CG in this instance, I 'm just not feelin' it, so to speak.
Then again, I never liked the book much, despite reading it to my son numerous times.

This is funny. My reaction is similar to the above. I think it looks nice and might be interesting (the cartoon-real monsters are pretty cool), but the sentiments expressed therein are hardly fantastically original nor stunningly affecting (and it's just a trailer after all)
Meanwhile, over at hard-as-nails geek haunt (Geek-as-nails?) CHUD, guys like me report being in tears over this stuff.
I'm a friggin marshmallow. It's bizzarro world I tell you.

Seriously, I can't even tell you how much I want this movie to be good. Maybe it's just the hope talking, but I think it will be. I can't wait. This was one of my favorite books as a kid. Also, the Arcade Fire are awesome.

I really, really, really hate fantasy.
I dread "Bridge to Terabithia". I despise "Chronicles of Narnia" the book and the film.
And now I hate this movie, even though I haven't seen it yet.
Want to know why?
Because fantasy bares the shallowness of our imagination. The fantasies of the children from "Terabithia" are every inch as banal as the world they are trying to escape. "Chronicles of Narnia", when you strip both the fantasy trappings AND the much-hyped Christian underpinnings is essentially about a struggle against political oppression.
For goodness sake, if we are to escape this world, let's at least escape somewhere interesting.
