Actually the current consensus in the US appears to be that torture is a bad, bad, bad thing if it happens to "our boys"--especially if "our boys" are white--but not so bad if applied to dirty stinking foreigners--especially if said foreigners are--well, you know.
And if you question this consensus in any way, you're a mean-hearted bastard who wants people to die.
In other news, the drug war is a bad, bad thing if it threatens to affect rich American tourists in Mexico but not so bad if it just affects poor people in the US or Mexico.

Yes, we are. Ironically, I was just tweeting not minutes ago that this a) makes me cry and b) makes it more and more impossible to read the news.
It's hard to stay informed when you feel like you need antidepressants afterward. Or before starting, even.
