my week at the movies: ‘Angels & Demons,’ ‘Adoration,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Outrage,’ ‘Easy Virtue,’ ‘Next Day Air’(?)

Remember when they teased us for Star Trek (opens May 8 in the U.S. and the U.K.) with this? I do. And now the moment is upon us. Reboot me up, Scotty!

I posted the trailer for Kirby Dick’s documentary Outrage (opens in the U.S. on May 8; no U.K. release date has been announced) earlier today, and now that I’ve seen the movie, I can tell ya: The trailer does the film excellent justice. Even if hypocritical politicians are hardly a newsflash...

Easy Virtue (played in U.K. theaters last fall and is already available on DVD in Region 2; opens in the U.S. on May 22) is based on a Noel Coward play and features, among its delicious cast, Colin Firth, who is always watchable, and Ben Barnes, whom I suspected -- okay, hoped -- we’d be seeing more of after The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. (Barnes was at New York Comic Con last year in aid of that other film, and, oh my...) I’m not entirely sold on the idea of Jessica Biel doing Coward, but, well, that’s why I keep going to the movies: I want to be surprised.

I’m still not sure if I’ll check out Next Day Air this Friday, May 8, when it opens without -- as far as I can tell -- benefit of press screenings. (No U.K. release date has been announced.) It’ll probably depend on how I feel on Friday, and whether I think I can weather what it sure to be an onslaughter of abject idiocy in exchange for what will certainly be only a few precious moments of genius from Mos Def. Someone get this man a better agent, please...
