U.K. box office: ‘Angels & Demons’ heavenly

Everybody loves Tom Hanks. Or the prospect of the Vatican getting blown up:

1. Angels & Demons: £6 million (NEW)
2. Star Trek: £3.5 million (2nd week; drops 42%)
3. Coraline: £1.4 million (2nd week; drops 44%)
4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine: £1.2 million (3rd week; drops 46%)
5. Hannah Montana: The Movie: £1 million (3rd week; drops 23%)

(actual numbers, not estimates)

Angels & Demons actually did better, comparatively speaking, in the U.K. than it did in the U.S. and Canada -- it would have had to make $60 million in North America to match its performance in Britain. Star Trek, conversely, did a little worse in the U.K., though it still held strong, with a drop similar to its drop in North America.

The big difference on either side of the pond is that unlike the flat numbers over last year on the North American side of the Atlantic last weekend, total business was up a whopping 154 percent over the same weekend last year in the U.K., when Iron Man and What Happens in Vegas... were the No. 1 and No. 2 films, neither of which was new and both of which fell in the range of only £1.5 to £1.9 million.
