my week at the movies: ‘Away We Go,’ ‘Food, Inc.,’ ‘Lovely by Surprise,’ ‘My Life in Ruins,’ ‘Whatever Works’ (plus ‘Up’)

BUMPED UP to say that I've addded another movie to my schedule this week: Blood: The Last Vampire (opens in the U.S. in July, and in the U.K. on June 19; it didn't open last week as I had indicated in an earlier post) -- it's an English-language telling of a Japanese Buffy.

I didn’t do one of these last week, and I’m not sure if anyone missed it. Should I keep doing thing? I kinda like them myself, though I often run out of time, and it seems sorta silly to be posting this after Monday (this week seems okay, with yesterday being a holiday). Thumbs up or down?

Sam Mendes has a new movie, and it’s written by Dave Eggers, and it stars that guy from The Office and that chick from Idiocracy and it’s called Away We Go and it opens in the U.S. on June 5 and in the U.K. on September 18 and its poster looks like Juno joined Flight of the Conchords and all of that means, maybe, that people are either gonna love it or hate it. Well, except for Kate Winslet -- she’ll probably love it.

Lovely by Surprise (will go straight to DVD in Region 1 on July 7) is, I’m told, an “experimental,” “metafictional” work about a novelist trying to finish her first novel. Maybe it’ll be like Stranger Than Fiction...

Tired of hearing on the news about a hundred thousand tons of chop meat being recalled, or dozens of people sickened by tainted spinach? Hate the way supermarket tomatoes have no damn taste at all? Food, Inc. (opens in the U.S. on June 12; no U.K. release date has been announced) is a new documentary about why that crap happens. Yes, that guy who wrote Fast Food Nation is interviewed here.

My Life in Ruins (opens in the U.S. on June 5; no U.K. release date has been announced) looks like Nia (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) Vardalos doing her “I’m fat and ugly and nobody likes me and oh look a hunky guy fell in love with me!” schtick. Whatever Works (opens in the U.S. on June 19; no U.K. release date has been announced) looks like Woody (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) Allen doing his “old neurotic guy falling in love with a nubile and wackily innocent young girl” thing. Joy.

I will not be attending a press screening of Up (opens in the U.S. on May 29, and in the U.K. on October 16). I’ll write more about that in another post. But I’ll attend the earliest public screening I can on Friday and go sit in a Starbucks with my laptop and write my review right away. So you can look for that here by Friday afternoon.
