question of the day: What movie are you most looking forward to in July?

As of this writing, 12 movies will open wide in North America in the month of July. Which means that even if you’re an active moviegoer and see a movie each week, you’ve still gotta pick and choose (and it’s even worse if you’re in a city on the arthouse circuit, but let’s not make this too complicated).

After a jump, a list of those 12 movies to whet your appetite, or not, as the case may be:

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

July 1
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (trailer) (also opens in the U.K. on July 1)

Public Enemies (trailer) (also opens in the U.K. on July 1)

July 10
Bruno (trailer) (also opens in the U.K. on July 10)

I Love You, Beth Cooper (trailer) (opens in the U.K. on August 21)

July 15
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (trailer) (also opens in the U.K. on July 15)

July 24
G-Force (opens in the U.K. on July 31)

The Orphan (opens in the U.K. on August 7)

The Ugly Truth (opens in the U.K. on August 7)

July 31
Aliens in the Attic (opens in the U.K. on August 7)

The Collector (no U.K. release date has been announced)

Funny People (opens in the U.K. on August 28)

Janky Promoters (no U.K. release date has been announced)

Which of these movies are you most looking forward to in July?

(If you have a suggestion for a QOTD, feel free to email me.)

No contest at all. It's Harry Potter for sure. Been waiting for this since the previous movie.

Gotta be Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The ultimate Harry Potter has not yet been done. But I keep hopin'. . .

Without a doubt Public Enemies. Can Bruno and Harry Potter really compete with Michael Mann when it comes to quality filmmaking?

on his worst day Michael Mann leaves those others in the dust. Harry Potter won't even make second place for me - Bruno gets that honour.

Harry Potter, just because I'm a big Potter fan. I'm equally concerned and excited for it. I don't care about how much was cut like some hardcore fans, I just want it to be a good film. If it's better than OotP (which I liked but didn't love), then I'll be happy. Paul Dergarabedian loved it, but he just "analyzes" box office numbers, so I have no idea if he has good taste or not.

Harry Potter, followed by Public Enemies, followed by Bruno.

Public Enemies. Although I am eager to see Harry Potter.

HFP. Harry F-in' Potter. I've waited and waited, and realistically will only get to see ONE movie in July, and that will be the one.

Potter is the only Must-See on that list. I'm sorry but all those other movies... Is it just me or is this just a very weak summer in terms of "Gotta See" films? Public Enemies? Normally a Michael Mann movie would be cool, but this is like the 15th retelling of Dillinger's life/death/. It's just another remake dammit.
I'm not getting old, dammit. It's just... something's off this year. Maybe it's the fact that there's been only 2 (!!!) superhero movies this summer. Maybe it was last summer, when Indiana Jones was such a damn disappointment and made me question the very nature of summer movies...

In order, my anticipation is as follows:
Quite Excited:
• Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
• Public Enemies

Will Wait For Bittor...uh...DVD:
• Ice Age 3
• Aliens in the Attic

HBO "Nothing Else On TV" Moments waiting to happen:
• The Ugly Truth
• I Love You, Beth Cooper
• Funny People
• The Orphan

No Interest (or less than no interest):
• The Collector
• Janky Promoters
• G-Force
• Bruno

PaulW, it's the writers strike. That's why I think if Half-Blood Prince is any good at all, then WB was genius for moving it to this summer. I expect Transformer's rankings to drop like a rock next week.

Harry Potter...no contest. But I'm looking forward to 'Public Enemies' as well.

In no particular order, Harry Potter, which should at least deliver good quality entertainment, like the others, and Public Enemies, which looks interesting, even if it is a remake/retelling... The Orphan sounds interesting, too, although it's probably going to be a paint-by-numbers evil child horror story ..but I have a soft spot for Vera Farmiga (she really should be cast in more films).

For a couple of hopeful seconds, I thought The Collector was based on the Fowles novel (now that's something that needs a remake, the first film made didn't impress me), but it turns out it's a C quality horror....*sigh*

So, yeah, I'm actually getting a bit excited about Potter, maybe it's because we'll get more of the main villains (Snape/Alan Rickman, anyone?)

And I hope Bale doesn't do his ridiculous Batman growl in Public Enemies too, like he did in Terminator Salvation...

Not looking forward to any movies in theatrical release for the next several months. Nothing appeals.

Instead, I'm keeping my DVD player on region 2 and watching all the Alex Cox films I bought from the BFI again and again.

One friend has been reminding me, though, to see The Maid when it comes out here. (Not until the autumn, I think.)

I'm looking forward to Harry Potter and Public Enemies. I am NOT looking forward the The Ugly Truth. The synopsis at imdb says it all.

Oh holy HELL - I just took a look at The Ugly Truth trailer at the official website and I think I might throw up.

Harry Potter. Although I've got a morbid curiosity as to how well it will do vs. how well it might've done back in November 2008 when there was very little competition for the entertainment dollar.

Our local arthouse is having a nine-day international children's film festival in late July. All the films are free, and for having a LOT of kids in a 500-seat theater, it's usually a fun experience. To see The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins and Howl's Moving Castle on the big screen (plus things like Egon and Donci, and Azur et Asmar, which just look fun and cool) -- I'm tossing a buncha donation dollars in that direction.

Easy! Harry Potter, of course!

Thirst is the only movie I'm really looking forward to seeing any time in the next twelve months. Speaking of Korean awesomeness, if people here haven't seen The Chaser yet it's gonna' be available for rent next week. Do yourself a favor and watch it. Or Mary Ann will mock your God and pass out in her own wine vomit...again.
