DeepDiscount.com phone spam

UPDATE: I got a response from DeepDiscount to the complaint I sent them directly about the robocall. In the email, I was polite but angry, and I ended by informing them that they’d lost me as a customer. This is DeepDiscount’s response, in its entirety:

Thank you for contacting DeepDiscount.com!

Per you request, we have removed your name and phone number from our calling list and you should not receive further calls. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Again, thank you for writing DeepDiscount.com. We appreciate your business.

Regards,

Customer Service Department

A canned form letter in response to a complaint about a robocall! Way to guarantee I never shop with you again.

I got a coupon in the mail the other day from DeepDiscount.com, the DVD retailer, good for 25 percent off my next purchase of DVDs (and/or blu-rays, except I don’t have a blu-ray player). That’s a pretty good deal, and I was probably going to spend more money at DeepDiscount than I should have. Like I’ve done in the past: I’ve spent a lot of money at DeepDiscount.

But just now, DeepDiscount spammed my phone with a robocall. A chipper recorded voice that wanted to be my friend tried to get me to buy stuff at DeepDiscount.com. I fucking hate these robocalls, and I never, ever buy anything, donate money, or take any action in response to them except get furious and vow never to do business again with companies that spam me by phone.

And now that includes DeepDiscount.com. I will never buy anything from DeepDiscount.com again, even if their prices are sometimes lower than Amazon’s.

DeepDiscount.com’s privacy policy includes this:

We respect your right to privacy. At DeepDiscount.com we collect only the information necessary for us to complete your order or to contact to you regarding the status of your order. The information we collect includes your name, email address, shipping address, billing address, credit card for payment and a password.

The DeepDiscount online order form does require a phone number. And DeepDiscount just called me for a reason that has nothing to do with completing an order or contacting me regarding the status of an order. I have no outstanding orders with DeepDiscount.

So long, DeepDiscount. You just lost a customer.

During the last election, I recall stories about the political parties taking advantage of this reaction, sending out fake robocalls that claimed to be from their opponents, in order to sway voters against the target.

Inevitably this fake robocalling idea will make its way into the everyday battlefield of business competition. If it hasn't already.

I don't think this is fake robocalling, as their sale is going on.

As a previous customer, I got the robocall too. It was pretty surprising to say the least...

I got a call, myself. Voice mail. I don't know what it said, as I erased it pretty much immediately. I'll join the boycott, too.

Keep fighting the good fight!

Well, today's update smashes any tenuous benefit of the doubt I might have been willing to extend. Not only are they using a lame form letter to respond to this disaster, they can't even be bothered to proofread the form letter. DeepDiscount.com has also lost me as a customer.
