I know I’m known as a Judd Apatow hater, and it’s true I haven’t liked most of his recent work, but I’ve always got an open mind and I always go into the next movie hoping that this is the one that changes things. Substitute Adam Sandler for Judd Apatow in the paragraph above, and read it again. (And then read my review of You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.) The trailers and TV ads for Funny People don’t make me automatically jump to the conclusion that I’m gonna hate it... I like, for instance, the suggestion -- with the clip from the fake-Adam Sandler film where the wizard turned him into a baby -- that Hollywood’s love affair with stupid comedies may get sent up. And the overall tenor seems to be one of “I make idiotic jokes and act like an overgrown 12-year-old because I’m afraid and in pain.” That can’t be bad, can it? Of course, if I love this or even merely like it, it probably means Sandler and Apatow fans won’t, and the film will flop. Funny People opens in the U.S. on July 31 and in the U.K. on August 28. support

They played this trailer before 500 Days of Summer. I think they may have altered the couple of swear words, though - I know it wasn't flagged with a red band when I saw it.

I am really curious as to what Apatow can do with some more serious subject matter. I am actually 100% confident that Sandler will shine in this roll - loved him in Reign Over Me and Punch Drunk Love, but Apatow choosing to cross over beyond just flashes of seriousness (which all his works have), is new territory for him. With the help of Sandler moreso than buddy Seth Rogen, I think this has a chance to break out of the typical Apatow flick territory (although I do like Apatow films/tv shows)
So far the trailers, which are great, seem to emphasize the comedic aspects, but I am more interested in how well the drama is fleshed out. We’ll see. I’m also glad that, in typical Apatow fashion, the TV trailer features a great song - “Ain’t That Strange” by Rhett Miller. A friend who hated Knocked Up as much as I did has already seen this film. She was pleasantly surprised and recommended it to me. She did reach the same conclusion as you though - since she liked it, it will surely bomb with the typical dudebro loving audience.
