my week at the movies: ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,’ ‘Julie & Julia,’ ‘Post Grad,’ ‘A Perfect Getaway,’ ‘I Sell the Dead’

UPDATE: I was planning to see The Time Traveler’s Wife (opens in the U.S. and the U.K. on August 14) next week, but I just learned of an earlier screening... tonight. So I’ve got a double feature tonight: Eric Bana melting through time, and then G.I. Joe. Should be fun!

So now the buzz on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (opens in the U.S. and the U.K. on August 7) is shifting again. Critics still haven’t seen it, but there have been some junket screenings for journalists interviewing the talent... and sometimes there’s overlap (some critics cover junkets, too, like I do for some films). And the word is that those junket screenings have gone over very well indeed: only eight reviews are counted at the moment, but the film is currently 88 percent Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes. Go know. I still think it looks pretty dumb. But I was at a junket for Taking Woodstock this weekend, and at the same time in the same hotel the junket for Joe was taking place, and journalists being the professional gossips that we are, the word going around was that the NYC junket screening of Joe the night before had been such a surprise hit that Paramount was gonna add a critics’ screening this week. My Paramount rep is still saying, “No screenings,” though. But I’ve got my ticket for a midnight showing on Thursday.

While I wait for the movie about the Swedish chef, I’ll make do with Julie & Julia (opens in the U.S. on August 7 and the U.K. on September 11), which I’m heading out to see momentarily. I’ll probably have to elevate Amy Adams to girl-crush status again after this...

Now what? Honey, ditch the business suit, keep the Converse, and do something you really love, not whatever it is your parents/your boyfriend/your friends/the crushing force of conformity want you to do. Alexis Bledel is Post Grad (opens in the U.S. on August 21, and in the U.K. on January 1, 2010), and how do I just know she’ll end up with a cute guy and a dream job by the time the credits roll?

I’m going on a tropical holiday with cutie-pie Steve Zahn. It’ll be A Perfect Getaway (opens in the U.S. on August 7, and in the U.K. on August 12), I just know it. Until he turns out to be the killer, of course. But what the hell. We gals like a dangerous guy, right?

It seems that Dominic Monaghan is looking to get as far away from airplane-crash castaway and hobbit as he can with I Sell the Dead (opens in the U.S. on August 7; no U.K. release date has been announced): he plays a graverobber. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it, right?

People playing graverobbers makes me want to watch Repo! again...

I'm tired of this blatant double standard aimed at men. When will a man make your "Girl Crush" status? We need to band together to overcome this kind of objectification. Likewise, I think your next "current boyfriend" should be Bella Abzug, just to balance things out.

Holy shit you guys, Devin over at CHUD gave GI JOE an 8.5/10:

Unlike this summer's travesty Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, GI Joe clues the viewer in on the geography of action scenes, it allows us to follow the choreography and it generally lets us know what the fuck is going on . . . The action scenes in GI Joe are almost uniformly excellent, starting with the first...

This is major. He hates everything!

I'm actually looking forward to it now... wow, who'd have thought?
