the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus’

I can’t believe I missed this one when it was released in Region 1 back in May. Hard to imagine there could have been something that looked worse that week:

When two enormous prehistoric creatures contend for supremacy of the sea, the California coast becomes the setting for a showdown that's been centuries in the making. Lorenzo Lamas and Deborah Gibson star.

Note how it’s “Deborah Gibson” here but plain ol’ Debbie on the actual DVD.

Authentic still from the film:

You know, I might have to check this out...

WINNER......EATS......ALL!!

BAD....FUCKING.....ASS!!!

Oh no? I think you mean oh yes!

This film contains the greatest scene of all time.

I remember when the previews for this came out (search youtube anyone who hasn't seen it) and it just looks so bad I have to watch it. Wasn't aware it was out yet though and honestly it had slipped my mind.

But it looks so terrible that I will be laughing on the floor (like I did when I saw Jason X) definatly must check it out soon.

Oh, come on. This movie looks awesomely bad. That scene JT posted totally seals the deal. I HAVE to see this.

Oh damn, JT's clip is awesomeness condensed into digital form.

That YouTube clip is made of awesome.

I totally added this to my Netflix queue. And bumped it right up to the top, too. Oh, how I wish I could stream this to my Roku right now...

I gotta see this...

The craziest thing is that they didn't even make it a low flying plane. It was ABOVE the cloud ceiling, and they drew further attention to the silliness with the lengthy falling sequence. If the octopus is intelligent enough to communicate with humans, I'm sold. Unfortunately these intentionally campy movies often end up being 90% bad bad and 10% so bad it's good (still a better ratio than the average Bay flick...zing!).

Wow, this seems like a movie that really calls out for snarky robots. Where was its viral Internet campaign?

I think amanohyo has it right - it's about 85% boring (mostly the "acting") and 15% cheesy fun (mostly the SFX sequences). The price they're charging is still more than it's worth, but once it hits the $1 bins...

Definitely worth going into it thinking "this is going to be bad", though.

Rather to my surprise, The Terminators (also from The Asylum) was a rather more coherent and effective film than Terminator: Salvation.

And I thought Jaws 2 was laughable...
