North American box office: ‘District 9’ hovers at the top of the weekendThe film earned back its budget -- and then some -- in three days: 1. District 9: $37.4 million (NEW) actual numbers, not estimates Ah, I got my wish of last week: G.I. Joe took a huge drop this weekend. I’m hoping that some of the folks who might have checked out Joe this weekend were diverted by District 9, and saw instead what a real science fiction action movie looks like. I’m so glad to see D9 do this well: it makes me a little hopeful that smart blockbuster movies are not dead. (The Time Traveler’s Wife opened respectably well, too: hoorah!) Also gladmaking: the abysmally bad The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard debuted down at No. 6, earning only $5.6 million. That still means that millions of people had their eyeballs seared by this one, but it could have been worse. It could have been tens of millions. Overall business was up 14 percent over the same weekend last year. It’s nice to have an August that’s not a total dumping ground, and that’s what happens when we get good movies: people shell out to see ’em. Milestones: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian passed $175 million sometime midweek just prior to this past weekend; and Terminator Salvation passed $125 million. G.I. I'm glad to see, not only District 9 at the top of the heap, but that it did make its budget on the first weekend. I'm stunned that it only took $30M to make, considering the $175-$200M budgets for the bloated toy commercials.

Actually, at about $8 per ticket a $5.6 million take would mean that less than a million people saw The Goods.

What is funny is to watch the fanboys try to grasp at straws right now. Like adding in international number to make the numbers look better and downplaying D9 cause it made "only 37 mil" but what they fail to see is that D9 made 7 mil while joe has yet to turn a profit.
If Joe breaks even domesticly I will be very surprized.
Still it is great to see D9 doing so well.

People need diversions so they go see whatever junk Hollywood dishes out. That doesn't mean they're stupid. I saw D9 in the great state of South Carolina and the theater was packed. Walking out, almost everyone, from good old boys to good Christian citizens, were saying the same thing; this movie kicked ass.

Try catching the Bollywood flick "KAMINEY" (means 'Scoundrels' in Hindi). It's not the usual Bollywood masala, but a crime caper that's more like a Tarantino or Guy Ritchie flick. It's directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, who's also done the music. Some of us think he's the best thing to have happened to Bollywood, alongwith another director called Sriram Raghavan. If you like Vishal's flick, do catch Sriram's "Johnny Gaddaar" (means 'Johnny the Traitor') that was released a year ago.
I believe if ever an Indian film maker wins an Oscar, it will be one of these guys.

5,600,000 / $12 (the going rate here in NYC, dunno what the average ticket price is of the screens it opened on) = 466,667 poor souls.

On second thoughts, Maryann, don't see 'KAMINEY'. I just saw it and found it disappointing. Being a Vishal Bharadwaj flick, and going by the rave reviews in India, my expectations were too high. It's just average in my book.
But do catch Sriram Raghavan's "Johnny Gaddaar". That's a flick I have seen and can vouch for.
