question of the day: Is it too soon for ‘Avatar’ tickets to be on sale?

Avatar, James Cameron’s eagerly awaited science fiction flick (watch the trailer), doesn’t open till December 18, but tickets for the first opening-day midnight shows are already on sale for some locations:

Online ticketers MovieTickets.com and Fandango on Friday began ringing up sales for "Avatar" performances at more than 75 AMC locations, most of them Imax 3D venues.

"Tickets being put on sale for a film four months in advance is unheard of," MovieTickets executive vice president Joel Cohen said. "The fact that tickets have already been sold really speaks to the tremendous buzz the film has already created and the power of James Cameron at the box office."

Why?

"Audiences are hungry for fresh fare with original storytelling," Fandango spokesman Harry Medved said. "And with 'Avatar,' you have no idea where the story is going to go."

Really? We’ve been promised a groundbreakingly new visual experience, but I haven’t heard any buzz about a story that is wildly original. As always, I’d love to be wrong about that, but nothing that I’ve seen or heard about Avatar so far suggests anything other than a pretty traditional kind of tale.

Is that Fandango spokesman right? Is the demand for this film so great that we should be worrying about securing tickets four months in advance? Or is it too soon for ‘Avatar’ tickets to be on sale?

I think it's simply another part of their publicity strategy. Especially since the initial teaser trailer seemed to meet with perhaps more negative fallout than expected.

I guess the idea would be to report to the general movie going public that, hey, Avatar tickets are on sale 4 MONTHS EARLY, and tickets are already being snapped up! WOW! GET IN ON THE FEVER EARLY!! Or:

HAVE A FEVER-TAR FOR AVATAR!!!

Ok, that was terrible...

Why does this movie just not look very good to me? It seems like another "Hey, we can afford CGI! Screw the plot!" release, coming soon to your local dollar-dive.

I went to the IMAX 3D Avatar day and experienced 16 minutes of footage (seemed like only 4 minutes because it was that good). I am trying to buy tickets myself after that experience.

Here is something you "skeptics" must keep in mind:

James Cameron directed 1) The Terminator, 2) Aliens, 3) The Abyss, 4) T2, 5) True Lies, 6) TITANIC!!!!

If you don't think Avatar is going to be the most amazing movie made in years, your crazy and I would not want to bet AGAINST a person that has not only made some of the best action films ever, but the highest grossing film ever.

And lets look at that highest grossing film ever in Titanic, it was 3 1/2 HOURS LONG!!!!! That is about twice the size of an average movie, meaning less showtimes to make money on per play, and STILL the movie makes more money than any other film ever.

So Avatar is the follow up to a masterpiece made 12 years ago.

That IMAX preview blew me away guys, the picture quality, the realism of the CGI (replacing real actors in film IS only 5 years away, sorry but its true), and the SOUND... the sound will win all the awards. When the creature flapped it's wings, I felt the bass in my chest as if I was standing in front of it!!!

I don't know when the last time I have been to the theater and a film received an applause or hearing whispers of "that was magnificent", "my goodness that was immaculate". WHO USES THESE PHRASES?

You go betting against Cameron on this one, your going to be that much angrier when your the cornball that can't get the hot ticket to see Avatar by waiting to buy on December 18th.

Avatar will be pre-booked for at least a month.
