ah, crap

My computer problems this morning have had me freaking out all day: I cannot afford to have a computer upgrade situation be an emergency. So I just went ahead and ordered a new Macbook Pro 15" laptop -- one of those gorgeous aluminum ones -- from the Apple Store.

This way, at least, I can do the transition at a human pace, and not in a panic. And since, as I suspect, this old laptop does still have some small amount of life left in it, I can pass it on to a friend who could really use it -- even if it dies in a couple of months, it will have given her a couple of months of online and work time that she wouldn't have otherwise have had.

Still, it's a fuckload of money at a time when we might be staring at the next Great Depression and I shouldn't be spending at all. But what the hell: it's my birthday next week, and a big one. 40!

Happy birthday to me. Ha-ha.

Hey, happy early birthday! That's an awesome present to yourself. Am very jealous.

Regarding the Great Depression II thing, I wouldn't be too worried about that now. All signs point to the recession either being over or very nearly so. It may not feel like it because unemployment is a lagging economic indicator, and this is likely to be a slow recovery, but things are looking up. For real.

Anyway, congrats on the shiny new laptop.

In other words, prosperity is around the corner...

Seriously, happy early birthday, MaryAnn.

If it helps, I do actually know people right now who have far worse problems than a broken laptop.
