the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘Scooby-Doo Meets the Harlem Globetrotters’

What is this, 1977? The Harlem Globetrotters? Does anyone under 35 even know who or what the Harlem Globetrotters are?

Scooby-Doo and the Mystery, Inc. gang score big thrills when they team up with the legendary Harlem Globetrotters in two hilarious action-packed mystery adventures.

On a visit to a quaint New England town, the gang is spooked by close encounters with the ghost of Paul Revere and a fire-spouting sea serpent! But it’s a whole new ballgame when the kids get a mystery-soling assist from their new pals” the Fabulous Harlem Globetrotters! Then, the Globetrotters and the Mystery, Inc. crew are ship-napped to a creepy island fill of ghostly frights -- where Scooby-Doo and the gang again join forces with the wisecracking hoopsters for some slam-dunk crook-busting fun!

Yup, nothing says “spooky” like Paul Revere being taken down by basketball clowns.

Well I'm 27 and I have in fact seen the Harlem Globetrotters in person. That said, I think most people my age probably don't know who they are, and certainly the target market for a new Scooby-Doo movie wouldn't. So this is sort of baffling.

Well, Scooby-Doo is pretty damn 70's, so maybe this is going for the infantile-adult-nostalgia market.

The Harlem Globetrotters are actually alive and well and still playing: http://www.harlemglobetrotters.com/ You know, they started a long time ago (in the 1920's) because -- wait for it -- NO BLACKS WERE ALLOWED IN THE NBA UNTIL 1950! (Considering how so many white people I know seem to think that Bball is a "black sport", I just had to point that out...)

I even know people under 30 who have taken their kids to see them, so that's two generations under 30.

Didn't the Scooby gang already MEET the Globetrotters way back when? :)

But why would Paul Revere be a bad guy? Or be in a "quaint New England town"? It's not like Boston's gone anywhere. Of all the founding fathers to pick on, they pick Revere? Whatever old man in a rubber mask is behind all these shenanigans is very disrespectful. Tsk tsk.

NEW friends the Harlem Globetrotters? Well, I suppose the Globetrotters that Scooby and the Gang met back in the seventies would all be well and truly retired by now, so that's technically true.

Incidentally, I'm 26 and Australian and I too have seen the Globetrotters in person. They were appearing at a mall, but their performance was disrupted by the arrival of the enraged ghost of Captain James Cook.

Joan: Couldn't you give a spoiler warning?

Wait. This is a new Scooby Doo animated movie and not a re-release of an old Scooby Doo cartoon made way back when?

And you're arguing that this would be worse than, say, a re-release of either of the two live-action movies? ;-)

On the other hand, I'm not sure I want to see a movie in which Scooby Doo teams up with a more modern opp culture icon like say, Jay-Z, Lil Bow Wow, the Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga or even Hannah Montana.

And I definitely don't want to see a cartoon in which the mystery villain poses as a more modern figure like, say, Michael Jackson or Edward Kennedy.

Oh, God, now I'm going to have thoughts of such shows in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks a lot, MaryAnn.

Pop culture icon, that is.

Apparently I'm being haunted by the ghost of Mrs. Malaprop...

And they would have got away with it...if not for that darn Flick Chick...

There must be a lof of Scatman Crothers fans among the tween set.

Nope - it's just a repackaging of two adventures from the 1970s series The New Scooby-Doo Movies. Nothing new here at all.
