my week at the movies: ‘Whip It,’ ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog: Live’

Gettin’ on a plane tomorrow for England, so screenings are pretty much out of the question. The only movie on my agenda for the week (unless I see something in England, which I probably won’t want to take the time out for) is the one I just came from a screening of: Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It (opens in the U.S. on October 2; no U.K. release date has been announced yet). This is a go-girl flick about Ellen Page’s Austin high schooler who discovers roller derby and is instantly hooked. I’m just about to go post my Twitter/Facebook first reaction to the film, which is this: “MaryAnn Johanson loves the sweet funky energy of WHIP IT, and now she’s dying to go roller skating again, which she hasn’t done since junior high.”

Tonight I’ll attend a live singalong of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog at Symphony Space in New York (for this, I’m missing the only NYC screening of Michael Moore’s new movie, Capitalism: A Love Story). Joss Whedon is hosting, and we’re promised special guests. (Please please please let it be Nathan Fillion!) Should be a blast, and it’s a benefit for the nonprofit 826NYC, which supports and encourages kids’ creative writing efforts. So it’s all cool.

I follow Nathan Fillion on Twitter and it seems he JUST left NYC. But maybe he's lying to throw off people. Who knows?

Have fun at the Dr. Horrible live singalong! And have fun in England!

as if i wasn't jealous enough!!

have a great time with horrible

and a safe journey to England

post your reviews this time!!!

guess we will be waiting a little bit longer for torchwood days 4 and 5 then?

woot! Glad you liked Whip It. My girlfriend is a roller girl, and I know she and her team have been looking forward to seeing it.

Have fun with Joss Whedon! Have fun in England! My roller girl girlfriend just got back from England. She's already clamouring to go back. B)

I was at the laundromat yesterday, and everything I go there the melody to "My Freeze Ray" pops into my head.

I'm looking forward to seeing Whip It. I have a rollergirl friend who has tried to recruit me for the past couple years, but I'm too afraid of getting injured. Maybe 10 years ago when I was young and unconcerned with the prospect of missing work and incurring huge medical bills!

And have fun in England! It's been four years for me and I'm desperate to get back there soon.
