watch it: “The Lemon”

In the interest of presenting both sides of the story, here’s the best the anti-health-care-reform people can muster:

(more below the ad... scroll down...)

Dear God! East Germany had a single-payer auto industry! And because we love cars in America, we cannot let single-payer health car happen. Won’t someone think of the cars?

Also: just because there may be problems with the Canadian system, we shouldn’t do anything to fix the far more numerous problems with the American health care system. Won’t someone think of the Canadians?

Notice that it still comes down to money: The Canadians who have money can get treatment in the U.S. The ones who don’t end up like Americans, selling their homes or cashing in their retirement funds to get treated. This is better?

This video seems to imply that if the US moves to a single payer system, every private doctor who caters to those who can afford special treatment will vanish. Maybe that's the case, but I need more convincing. Won't people with money always be able to get better and more timely care regardless of whether we have universal health care or not?

It's also funny that the creators of the video make use of certain trigger words in the beginning to get their target audience in the proper state of mind (i.e. angry and closed). Words like "Communist," "California," and "New York Times." Reminds me of that old Pace Picante commercial. I'm a little worried that there aren't any provisions in the suggested plans to convince more people to become general practitioners, but I don't hear many anti-reform ) or pro-reform) people bringing that issue up. They're probably too busy looking for heart-rending anecdotes that will reinforce their respective positions I guess.

The car review lacked that Top Gear magic (and I can so imagine Jeremy Clarkson, James May and the "Hamster" taking the cars=healthcare and running with it. They have a pretty low opinion of American cars.)

The most depressing thing about this ad is when the doctor mentions those that can pay and those that realise they have to sell house and cash in retirement funds...

I find it hard to believe such an unacceptable situation isn't a) recognised as such and b) is used as a defence of the current system.
