trailer break: ‘The Road’

I’ve already noted that I’m dreading this -- in a good way -- because the book is so unrelentingly brutal. And the trailer only intensifies that dread. I fully expect the usual concentrated passion from Viggo Mortensen, and Viggo’s been calling his kid costar, Kodi Smit-McPhee, the best actor he’s ever worked with.
So, you know, I’m prepared to be devastated. In a good way.
The Road opens in the U.S. on November 25, and in the U.K. on January 8, 2010.

Part of me wants to see this film, but a big part of me knows to stay away unless I want to be traumatized.
It'll be interesting to see how this film does at the box office. It's been pushed back so many times now, that you have to worry a bit about how strong it is. At the same time, do people really want to see movies that might make them feel even more like crap? Or will people walk away from the film with hope (because you are left with some hope at the end)?

I like a well-made dystopia. So many of them are very badly done (like the upcoming 2012, which looks like one large video game). The two best were Children of Men and Testament. I hope to add The Road to that list, and certainly the book is one of the best literary dystopias.
