the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island’

It’s a Choose Your Own Adventure-type thing, according to the Sony press release about the DVD:

Would-be buccaneers can even participate in the action, as PLAYMOBIL: THE SECRET OF PIRATE ISLAND features an exciting interactive storyline. At certain points throughout the story, the lead characters, Jack and Amelia, will turn to the viewers and ask, “What should we do?” Two possible options will appear on the screen, leaving it up to the viewers to decide how the story will proceed. This unique feature allows for 28 different possible story combinations, making PLAYMOBIL: THE SECRET OF PIRATE ISLAND 28 different adventures for the price of one! It’s a magical adventure that will light up every child’s imagination.

I’m using my imagination to imagine that someone saw all the fan-made LEGO videos online, and figured, Damn, we should be gettin’ us some of that action.

I loved the Playmobil toys as a kid, and I still love ’em, but there’s something a wee bit horrifying about this. Jack and Amelia look terrified:

Maybe God can help them:

Though anything that would scare the shit out of a pirate might be a challenge even for the Almighty:

Oh no! Who let Dom DeLuise on the ship?!

I do love the chest hair, though...

So, it's a combination of Playmobil, pirates and choose your own adventure.

Why the "oh no"???

There's a Playmobil store in West Palm Beach where all the toys and playsets are laid out and kids can play with them in a very large room, portions of which can be reserved for parties. It's pretty awesome at first, but then you realize if your kid has toys of his own, it's like playing in his own living room, but with a bunch of other kids, some of whom aren't as well behaved. Anyway, they pretty much have everything for sale there too, and all sorts of rare custom parts.

We saw a Playmobil Neonatal ICU playset. Seriously. Sure, you can use it to explain to your next-to-youngest why their newest little sibling didn't come home from the hospital yet, but seriously. A neonatal ICU? It was next to the Playmobil defibrillator, three shelves up from the Playmobil Formula One cars.

Why the "oh no"???

Cuz the animation is sort of horrifying. Playmobil people shouldn't look scared, for one thing...

Okay, so it's Playmobil + pirates + CYOA + Horror - My question stands, what's not to like? ;-)

THAT'S interactive?

I have some SERIOUS issues with word usage here.

Well, in a world where your in-flight magazine is "personal".......

I'm sorry Grinebiter, but for some reason, my head immediately went to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya_tgpk9bTU

JoshDM...you're from West Palm Beach too? That place is technically in Boynton Beach though.

LaSargenta,

I had a whole bunch of CD-Rom games that worked like that at one point. They came with my Packard Bell - one of those ones that ran Windows 3.1 with the house-themed "Navigator" shell.

@LaSargenta: No need to be sorry! I never saw the film, but I remember the court case. And I like to contemplate future lit. crit. folks and sociologists discussing whether on not, way back in the twencen, all "personal assistants" provided "personal services". And whether a posh hotel's provision of a "personal toothbrush" meant that hostel guests had to share. I guess they'll have similar scholarly fun with "interactive" too.

Wow.. This is great! I can say that Plamobil do a great job in making their toy sets manipulate the existing world, but they also allow young children to dabble in the things they love. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Love how that Playmobile Hospital link instantly throws you into a spam site for handbags.
