trailer break: ‘Edge of Darkness’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

Crazy Mel Gibson is crazy.

“Hangin’ on the cross or bangin’ in the nails”? *snort*

Hey, not only did Martin Campbell direct Casino Royale, he also directed the 1985 British TV miniseries Edge of Darkness, of which this is a remake and -- obviously -- a truncation. It’ll be released in Region 1 next week (it’s already available in Region 2). I’ve added it to my Netflix queue, and maybe I’ll actually get to it before this movie comes out.

Edge of Darkness opens in the U.S. on January 29, 2010, and in the U.K. on February 19, 2010.

The original series is fascinating, and it makes me want to see other shows and movies with the late Bob Peck who is just great. I was so disappointed when I saw that Mel Gibson was starring in the movie version.

Great. Another story where the damage to a woman drives the man's motivations.

Most jarring for me is how they have replaced Bob Peck's stoic Northerner with hyper-emotional Mel (he'll do the Mel revenge-roar at some point in the film, I just know it). His slower, subtler greiving process is highlight in the original. Should have got Harrison Ford.

To the Women in Fridges motivation: It's a fair comment, but if they stick to the original Emma is gradually revealed to be very heroic in her own right.
It shares an awful lot with The Constant Gardener

Six hours of grieving is getting cut down to two. There's no time for subtle.

I still have vivid memories of the original mini series and especially of the haunting music written for it by Eric Clapton.

Like Muzz I also remember it for Bob Peck's slow burn. He would show that same grieving look burying his daughter or planning a raid on a nuclear facility making the latter all the more scary and ripe with impending doom.
