question of the day: What movie are you most looking forward to in December? As of this writing, 12 movies are set to open wide in North America in the month of December. (Others will open limited in December and go wide in January.) Which means that even if you’re an active moviegoer and see a movie each week, you’ve still gotta pick and choose (and it’s even worse if you’re in a city on the arthouse circuit, but let’s not make this too complicated). After a jump, a list of those 12 movies to whet your appetite, or not, as the case may be: December 4 December 11 December 18 December 23 December 25 Which of these movies are you most looking forward to in December? Everybody's fine looks great - except - it looks like everybody's affluent - which most of us are not (or perhaps it's just me).

I am desperate to see Sherlock Holmes! When I first heard about the movie I was worried they were going to screw it up, but seeing the trailers has changed my mind. I am not usually one to go to the theater on Christmas Day, but I think this year I'll be doing it.

Sherlock Holmes, by a long shot, precisely because it's a long shot and because Robert Downey Jr. is so tremendously good at what he does.

Wow. I have little interest in any of those movies. It's going to be up the reviews.
I do want to see Avatar, but it doesn't look like it's going to live up to the hype.
Brothers looks good, but not worth a theater visit.
I am a fan of the literary Sherlock Holmes. The movie looks iffy to me. We'll see.
The wife will probably take the kid to see Alvin 2. I'll stay far away from that crap.
Bummer of a month, really.

The not-appearing-on-this-list NINE.
{My background's theatre -- and though I'll probably never be cast as anyone's idea of Guido Contini, I've done marketing for a production of this one and fell in love with Murray Yeston's wonderful score. And Rob Marshall is probably the perfect directorial match for this one...}.
But that's just me! I realize we Old Theatre Hounds are in the minority most of the time.

That's a bad month at the movies, I think.
South Park effectively ruined Avatar for me a month ago.
Sherlock Holmes looks cool. I am, strangely, looking forward to that one.

David, don't let Trey Parker and Matt Stone's initial reaction to Avatar's lame teaser trailer get you down. Couldn't they at least see the film before criticizing it? Is that too much to ask for these days?
There are so many reasons to be excited for this film.
If the 3.5 minute trailer failed to excite you, try reading the Wired Magazine's article chronicling how Cameron spent 10 years developing the technology necessary to bring this $250 million dollar film to life.
Or look up the comments bewildered hollywood players like Speilberg, Del Toro, Jon Favreau, and Peter Jackson made after visiting Cameron's set.
Avatar's the type of film meant to be seen in IMAX 3D, and i kinda feel sorry for those who see it in traditional 2D theaters or those who decide to pass on it and see it on TV in 2012.
