trailer break: ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel’Take a break from work: watch a trailer... When will everyone learn that small household rodents and kitchen appliances simply do not mix? I knew a hamster once, name of Vlad. As in Vlad the Impaler. Because even when you gave him a treat, he’d bite you. Of course, he was a hamster, so it was kinda hilarious, because it was like being nibbled to death. But the point is: Vlad never once kissed my hand. And I never felt any urge to scream and swoon in his presence. Granted, he did not sing pop songs, either. But still: Humans and chipmunks aren’t really compatible, so why are all those girls sighing over Alvin? Weird. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel opened in the U.K. on December 21; it opens in the U.S. on December 23. Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

Yes, even in his 80s incarnation, with which I am the most familar, Alvin was always presented as some sort of swoony idol.
Actually, 80s Alvin and The Chipmunks was one of the first things to make me think about human/anthropomorphic animal relations as an impressionable young girl. It baffled me then, as it does now...
I suspect that's why the Chipettes were created, to ease some of the uncomfortable subtext.

Sorry to double post, but I have a hamster named Gertie, and she is probably the sweetest little critter.
I did have an evil pet rat many years ago like Vlad, though. She was vicious. So vicious that I "oops, let her go" across the street (I know, bad, but I was a stupid kid) and she showed up the next day in my back yard like "You thought you could get rid of me, bitch?!"
Resigned, I took her back and kept her until she died of natural causes.
