the other ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movie, sex with the Na’vi, more: leftover links
Every week my browser gets cluttered up with tabs for stuff that I stumble across and figure I might be able to use as a Question of the Day or a WTF Thought for the Day or grist for some other post. And inevitably, I end the week with most of that material unused. But there’s no reason to let this stuff go to waste: I can still share it with you, for your amusement, and start the new week with a clean slate.
Herewith this week’s leftover links, in no particular order:

From the Na'vi article:
Um, sexy how, exactly?

Sexy for people who hate the sweaty humanness of sex, presumably.

They actually called it 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes'?
Wow, that requires some impressive stones.

"Rob Zombie to direct CSI Miami episode"?
It sure will be interesting to see white trash rednecks in Miami. The question is how will he get away with using the word "skullf**k" on network television?

Well, Conan Doyle did write one of the first pieces of popular fiction about dinosaurs, so it's not entirely out of left field. Still, it kinda seems like fanfic that got turned into a screenplay.
I think it takes bigger stones for someone to deliver this snarky put-down on the blog for "SyFy," the network that gave us "Mansquito" and "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus." Pot, meet kettle.

And this, ladies and gents, is where the interwebs gets the idea that Cameron has created the ultimate fan fic for furries.

Dr. Rocketscience: I think you gravely underestimate the powers of furries and the internet to turn ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING into fetish fuel.
Besides, the Na'Vi were designed to be attractive to mainstream audiences so Jake's romp wouldn't lose them in laughter or disgust. Had the Na'Vi not been conventionally attractive, or the mating rituals not as traditional, it would probably be a much more daring endeavor (And probably a massive commercial disaster). Now, had the hermaphroditic alien chick used her tentacles to impregnate the dude, and a large number of the American audiences STILL found that hawt, then this would be a much more interesting discussion.
Then again, I'm honestly to the point where nothing freaks me out or surprises me anymore. Instead, I'm having fun with the sociopolitical ramifications of furry porn. Questions like: How long will "Humanity" remain the definition of "personhood" once we start dealing with aliens/genetic creations/AI/transhumanist? Would furries (as in the fans) wind up being the new wave of abolitionists and civil rights activists, or become the most vocal defenders of a second class citizenship of sexually compatible intelligent beings? Would the motivations change if those non-human beings were not sexually compatible, or bizarre/ugly enough to be undesirable?
