Zachary Quinto gives up Spock? a Weird Al movie? save ‘Mad Men’s Sal, and more: leftover links

Every week my browser gets cluttered up with tabs for stuff that I stumble across and figure I might be able to use as a Question of the Day or a WTF Thought for the Day or grist for some other post. And inevitably, I end the week with most of that material unused. But there’s no reason to let this stuff go to waste: I can still share it with you, for your amusement, and start the new week with a clean slate.

Herewith this week’s leftover links, in no particular order:

But I loved loved loved Zachary Quinto as Spock!

Also, David Beckham on the Extremely Handsome British men list? As a Brit, I am deeply ashamed that he is representing British manhood to the USA. We're doomed.

I read that Zach Quinto/Spock story a few days ago, and my immediate reaction was "That can't be right. I thought I'd read he was contracted for at least one, if not two, sequels." io9 has a followup on the story that makes more sense: Quinto has decided he's not going to any publicity appearances about Spock for the next 2 years - which will start the run-up for the next Star Trek's summer 2012 release. That means no convention appearances, no interviews specifically about Spock, no work in other ST properties. (He made this announcement while discussing his cameo appearance in the Star Trek: Online mmorpg.)

That makes much more sense. Very reassuring!

HAHAHAHAHHHAHAHA!!! I just totally got Poe'd by that WSJ Leno article. Brilliant!

Two more and I'm done:

1) Where does these notions about Christina Hendricks come from?
"She's got big boobs and she's not afraid to flaunt them!"
Yes, because if there's one thing Americans hate, it's large breasts.
"Well, she's a 'big girl', which is-"
No, she's a full grown woman, not a girl. And frankly, she's not even that big.
"No, but she's a healthy weight, not a rail thin waif."
OK, but then isn't the appropriate adjective "normal"?
"But Hollywood promotes such a bad body image!"
True. On the other hand, if Hendricks is "big", what makes you think that the millions of American women adversely affected by this won't look at her and say to themselves, "If she's big, I must be a fucking whale!"?

2)OK, that's the second 'tween update of Strawberry Shortcake. She's no gone from cupie doll to tomboy to 'tween girl. So?
A 'tweenification if Dora the Explorer is weird. Basically, they've aged her from 4 years old to about 8-10. Why? Are her creators worried about losing their former audience? Are no new 3-5 year olds being raised? If you want to expand your market, wouldn't inventing Dora's older sister/cousin "Sophie" or sumsuch make more sense?
And finally, who the fuck lists Rainbow freakin' Bright among their "favorite cartoon characters"?? Seriously? I particularly enjoyed the comment about her "phallic-like scepter"> I guess to some, any cylindrical object longer than it is wide = penis.

Yeah, I'm guessing Quinto is doing everything he can to not get too strongly associated with Spock, while still keeping the movie gig. Or the thought of appearing at a convention 'as' Spock is as abhorrent to him as it sounds to me. Or both!

to be fair re Hendricks in Mad Men they do shoot her ass from a very odd angle no wonder people are obsessed with it it's like really well upholstered or something I'm sorry I'm not use to objectyfing a woman's body - a guy would do this much better

plus I'm not saying she's fat but she's not one of those girls who can wear everything either

My case. I rest it.

I just meant she could wear clothes that flatter her figure more. She shouldn't wear high collar stuff cos then she just looks like she has a mono boob - I have this problem too! I'm sure she has a tiny waist and I could probably still fit about 7 of her in my jeans! Like I say there are bits of Mad Men where the camera is put at ass level and just follows her around. You can't help but notice when someone is shot like that, to exagerate her features. Isn't that sort of the point in Mad Men, that women could still look like women and not starved little birds? Nobody in Mad Men thinks she should lose weight.

I remember her in Firefly and I don't remember thinking she was fat in that either.

Okay since I don't watch Mad Men and am absolutely crap at remembering actor names I wasn't sure who we were talking about, so I had to go check to see which character in Firefly was even hypothetically "big". We couldn't be talking about Hailey could we? No way. Wait... Saffron? Seriously, Saffron?

Who are these people who think this is up for debate? She has a slim, hot body that most "normal" girls would kill for. Period, end of discussion. WTF is wrong with people's image of women when Saffron might even conceivably be "fat"?!

Oh wait, I have a pretty good idea.
