trailer break: ‘Cop Out’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

This is the movie that was once titled A Couple of Dicks. Kevin Smith thinks it’s funny that the new title -- changed for obvious reasons of prudery -- is Cop Out (after an interim alteration to A Couple of Cops). Unfortunately, the trailer makes the movie look like a standard hack-job action comedy. A cop out, if you will, for Smith, directing his first big-budget studio film from a script he did not write.

Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott together in the same movie? I suppose the collective IQ of their typical characters -- as these certainly appear to be -- perhaps approaches that of one normal person. So maybe together they’re supposed to make up one half of the buddy couple. I wonder how Bruce Willis feels about costarring with morons...

Is all that “no no no hell no” stuff from Morgan at the end meant to be funny? Cuz it’s painful.

Cop Out opens in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on February 26.

According to IMDB:

When Kevin Smith found out the studio was going to lock in the title of the film as "A Couple of Cops" so they could run the trailer behind Sherlock Holmes (2009) Christmas weekend he told a producer, "God that title is going to feel like such a f***ing cop out." The producer replied, "We should just call the movie that."

I feel kinda bad for Kevin Smith. He can't quite seem to catch a big break. He's never going to be first tier as a writer or director, but it'd be nice if he could push firmly into the second tier. He seems perpetually one film away from spending the rest of his career in direct-to-DVD.

That said, all of his choices, at that particular moment in time, seem to be the right ones. This choice for instance: he's made it reasonably clear that Bruce Willis asked him to take the directing job on this. What's a guy from Jersey gonna do? Say no to Bruce Willis?

I have that secret hope in the back of my head that this will end up being good, not because I love every Kevin Smith movie (I don't), but I like the underdog.

Sean William Scott actually annoys me far less than he should, esp in certain circumstances.

But I'm beginning to wonder if Tracy Morgan schtick that he seems to play everywhere, only really works best in the context of 30 rock.

e - ditto. except for the tracy morgan thing. i dont think it works all that well on 30 Rock. i think he may be the most annoying actor working today. but i am pulling for this one, anyway.

Yeah, i'm hoping that the fact that this isn't 'his' film will make a bit of a change. His track record's been patchy (and this from someone who counts Chasing Amy as one of his favourite films).

The title he kept pushing for was 'A Couple of Dicks', apparently. The studio wouldn't allow it based on having a 'rude' word in the title, even after KS pointed out that Inglourious Basterds did pretty well...

not knocking Kevin but what's the point of him directing a script he DIDN'T write?

I'm not getting that at all.

What's not to get, Lisa? If you don't think Kevin Smith will do something just for the money, you haven't been paying attention. :)

I love all his films, some more than others, and I have heard that this trailer is NOT representative of the movie. So, regardless... I'm there on opening day.

I know nothing about this movie but he's a terrible director - he's a much better writer.

Here's the RedBand trailer.

Looks like a much different, better movie to me.

I guess links like that don't work.
