Brian, your phrase works without the strikethrough. "Most embarrassing entertaining" is a rather effective and accurate description of that ambivalent decade, I think.
Your phrase also tempts me to seek out a good portmanteau word, but sadly those efforts rarely work out so well as I had hoped. In this case I can't even seem to find a halfway decent one.

Enterbarrassing?
