‘Lost’ blogging: “Sundown”

(previous: “Lighthouse”)

There’s no way to “review” or “analyze” or even “discuss” this show on an episode-by-episode basis -- it’s more like you just have to react and try to guess what the hell is going on. So I’m not even gonna try to impose any sense or reason upon it: I’m just going to react. Maybe when it’s all said and done there will be something cohesive to say. Till then...

Perhaps needless to say, Lost doesn’t make much sense while you’re watching it. My ramblings will surely make even less sense if you haven’t seen the episode... and something may get spoiled for you that you don’t want spoiled. You have been warned.

So, here are the thoughts I jotted down, pretty much in order as they occurred to me as I watched:

Okay, a Sayid episode. And of course his lady Nadia is still alive in the alternate universe. How sweet! Oh no! But she’s married to someone else! *sob*

Uh-oh! Brother is in the unexciting dry-cleaning business that involves terse phone calls at the dinner table. Will Jack Bauer be involved?

The score is sounding Raiders of the Lost Ark-sy again. This is obviously the “Mysterious Temple Theme.”

Did that baseball fall off the table with, like, more gravity or something? It didn’t bounce right.

“No, Mr. Sayid, I expect you to kill him...”

Is there any story at all left on the island? Or is it all just people talking to each other about how they don’t know where anyone else is and they don’t know what’s going on and would they please pass a message on to someone else?

Best bad line: “One minute you’re banished, the next you’re telling everyone they’re gonna die.” I think the show started pulling our leg somewhere along way. Maybe we went through a parody wormhole at some point...

Ah, so, we now know who wins in the imaginary matchup of “Republican Guard versus L.A. mobster”...

So now Sayid is ruler of the temple? At the right hand of the smoke monster, presumably, too. And we should care because...?

(next: “Dr. Linus”)

At least the number of characters in the show has started to go down. Only 10 episodes left!

Why do even bother posting this? What a waste

11 episodes left, not 10. 12 hours.

We're going back to the initial "The Stand" idea here. I just don't understand what's with all the people on the island. Including Cindy the stewardess and the 2 kids from the tail section.

That was amazing! I think that Sayid's character has been inconsistent of late - I didn't understand why he went to work for Ben and then shot him as a child - it showed a distinct lack of knowledge of the space -time continuim. So I'm delighted he got his own story and Naveen give a great performance.

I'm an easily pleased Lost fan - I'm like -Smokie killed someone -awesome! Kung -fu! Temple Massacres! Colour me happy! Lapidus and Ilana were so cool, sweeping in to save Miles like that - and Sun finally knows Jin's ok for real - more time could have been given to this moment.

I like that they started from the question of whether or not Sayid is a good man. If he's a good man who does bad things, what's the difference?

One day, I'm going to watch every episode in order and then I'll understand it.

I think matters are heading towards an endgame very quickly. Apparently the 2nd or 3rd to last episode will not have any season regulars in it. So I reckon the one before will end with Jack being killed stone dead or some other massive clift -hanger so that you have to wait even longer to see if he is, in fact, stone dead.

I think that the lostaways are going to have to decide between their sideways lives and their island lives. Dogen spoke of getting what he wanted, his son's life but he was then stuck on the island. (I wonder why only he could protect it). They're going to be given a glimpse of happiness and then it's going to be torn from whomever's left standing.

Didn't Nick, the deaf mute, die in the Stand? I wonder who in the Lost Universe would correspond to that? Hurley? and will Sayid kill him?

Can't wait to see how it all falls out.

What's interesting is that we really don't know if the alternate timeline was created due to the blast. That's been conjecture.

Consider that if the plane never crashed, then none of the time travelers would have been sent back in time.

Which means none of their actions in the 1970s to help the Dharma Initiative (or even in the 1950s, to help Richard's Others with "Jughead") would have taken place.
