trailer break: ‘Eat Pray Love’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

You have to respond to a guy who looks like Yoda who cold-reads you and tells you some mushy bullshit that could apply to anyone? Huh. I was not aware of this.

I don’t know the book this movie based on, but if it really is about a woman finding herself without there having to be a man involved, that’s a good thing. Though James Franco is awfully cute...

Of course it’s real easy to let yourself go and travel the planet if you have the money for such an indulgence. And as if any Hollywood movie would let Julia Roberts get actually fat and sated on pasta.

Is this the beginning of a new genre? The feel-good spiritual journey?

Eat Pray Love opens in the U.S. and Canada on August 13; no U.K. release date has been announced.

That book is fiction? I'd always thought it was a self-help book, given the title.

Huh.

I read the book on a friend's recommendation and am fairly 'meh' about it. Yes, MaryAnn, she does find herself without a man but from what I remember it's also fairly self-help healing crystals and chanting pseudo Hindu sort of 'spiritual' (not that there's anything wrong with that if that's your bag. So, she finds herself but it's man-replaced-by-spritual-whatsit as opposed to woman finds herself on her own without having to rely on anything else.

It's not fiction, Michael. The book tells a true story.

I'm not sure that substituting spiritual awakening for a man to solve your problems is somehow an unfair or unenlightened thing to do. Don't the people who have those epiphanies *without* the previous framework for spiritual seeking end up being prophets?
