my week at the movies: ‘Micmacs,’ ‘Date Night,’ ‘The Secret in Their Eyes,’ ‘Mother and Child’
Micmacs (now playing in the U.K. and available to preorder on Region 2 DVD; opens in the U.S. and Canada on May 28), in which French comedian Dany Boon is a guy with a bullet in his head on a quest to destroy the weapons manufacturer who made the bullet. It’s from Jean-Pierre Jeunet -- of A Very Long Engagement and Amelie -- so it’s sure to be a charming and delightful tale of destruction and mayhem. I think I’ve already said everything I have to say about Date Night (opens in the U.S. and Canada on April 9, and in the U.K. on April 21) until I actually see it. The Secret in Their Eyes (opens in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington DC on April 16; no Canadian or U.K. release dates have been announced) was this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. Other than that, I know it’s a thriller from Argentina, and the rest will wait till I see it. Mother and Child (opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 7; no Canadian or U.K. release dates have been announced) is about three women -- Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, and Kerry Washington -- whose lives have been affected by adoption. Since it’s from Rodrigo Garcia, who made the honest and intriguing Nine Lives a few years ago, I expect it won’t be much like the other movies about women and babies getting thrown at us these days. support

I saw "The Secret In Their Eyes" a few weeks ago - I found it quite intriguing (in a good way... it is a suspense film) I personally thought "The Prophet" was a stronger film and should have the Best Foreign Language Oscar, but TSinE was more haunting and stuck with me for quite a while. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think.

I am so excited to see Micmacs! I hope it opens somewhere here in Maine. I'd travel to Boston to see it if I had to, loved all of Jeunet's films.

Having been seriously disappointed by the blockbuster-grossing Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis, I'm not particularly enthused for more of Dany Boon. That said, the addition of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the possibility of a much better script than that of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis do give me some hope, I suppose.
