my week at the movies: ‘Babies,’ ‘Survival of the Dead,’ ‘Princess Kaiulani,’ ‘The Losers,’ ‘The Back-up Plan,’ ‘Ondine’

Awww. It’s a year in the lives of four babies from around the world. How the hell cute is Babies (opens in the U.S. and Canada on May 7; no U.K. release date has been announced) gonna be, anyway?

George A. Romero has yet another zombie movie in the offing for us: Survival of the Dead (will be available in the U.S. on demand via Amazon on April 30; opens theatrically in the U.S. and Canada on May 28; already available on Region 2 DVD from Amazon U.K.). In it, apparently zombies attack some people, who have to fight them off. Shocking.

Princess Kaiulani (opens in the U.S. on May 14; no Canadian or U.K. release dates have been announced) is about the young royal of late-19th-century Hawaii who fought for the independence of her people. (Spoiler warning: She lost.) Q'orianka Kilcher, who was Pocahontas in Terrence Malick’s intriguing The New World -- I’m curious to see more of her.

The Losers (opens in the U.S. and Canada on April 23, and in the U.K. on May 28) are just like the A-Team, except you’ve never heard of them. Also, they’re not for hire... Oh, wait: they are. Zoe Saldana hires them. Cuz she’s flush with cash after her paychecks for Star Trek and Avatar. Also starring Jeffrey Dean “The Comedian” Morgan and Chris “Future Captain America” Evans. Fun!

Would whoever came up with the hideous idea for The Back-up Plan (opens in the U.S. and Canada on April 23, and in the U.K. on May 7) please never work in Hollywood again? Thanks loads. (I’m gonna miss the press screening for this one, which wasn’t till Wednesday night anyway, so I’ll take this bullet on Friday morning at my local multiplex.)

Near as I can tell, Neil Jordan’s Ondine (opens in the U.S. and Canada on June 4; it opens in the U.K. on March 5) is pretty much The Secret of Roan Inish, except it has Colin Farrell as an Irish fisherman finding the mermaid in his net. Or maybe it’s Splash. Either way, you probably can’t go wrong with a mermaid movie.

I would be a little optimistic for The Losers if it didn't involve the director of I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer

Granted, I do own every single issue of The Losers. It was a good comic; read like a slightly more intelligent blockbuster movie.
