trailer break: ‘Cyrus’Take a break from work: watch a trailer... Oh dear. I’m ready to hate this, or I’m ready to love this. John C. Reilly is “Shrek,” but he still gets beautiful Marisa Tomei. Except she’s not “perfect,” because she had a life before him... or else she’s not “perfect” because she’s a freaky mom with a freaky relationship with her freaky son. Maybe it’ll still manage to be unexpected and unusual and not all about how miserable John Shrek Reilly’s life is because everything doesn’t go his way. Pretty please...? Cyrus opens in the U.S. and Canada on June 18, and in the U.K. on September 17. Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

I'd like to love this, because of the cast, but the fact that it's directed by the Duplass brothers is making me worry. I mean, mumblecore films generally centre around insufferable, whining, overprivileged people hashing out their completely unimportant problems at excruciating length, so this...
...may be an accurate summary. I hope not. At the very least, it's got proper actors and an actual cinematographer, so it should be leaps and bounds ahead of their previous work.

I'm with you, MA. I hope I'd like this. So...when is there the film where we have "Fiona" and the guy who finally gets interested in her is Don Cheadle, or Rob Lowe, Crispen Glover, Hank Azaria (okay, I could see that), or Chrisopher Ecclestone (yes, please) (all Tomei's age)? Seems the beast is always male. Still, at least Tomei and Reilly are close to the same age (for once!) But maybe that's the way it goes. If the guy is really homely he has to settle for a woman his own age. (Sorry, I must be feeling really cynical today.)

As a middle-aged single straight guy, you'd think I'd be more sympathetic to stories about middle-aged single straight guys who are dateless and desperate, but er--I'm not.
At least, not when it feels this unearned.
Maybe the actual movie will be better but in the meantime, I'm not exactly reminded of the relationship between Levin and Kitty in Anna Karenina. And this from someone who actually liked Tomei's relationship with Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

The two male lead characters look like a serial killer and a child molester. This is supposed to be endearing to whom: women? This trailer looks creepy as hell. Poor Marisa Tomei.
